## The honest read

Bernice Wahler Landscapes is a Cape Cod landscape architecture studio based in Sandwich, with a second office in Duxbury, that works at the high end of residential design — the kind of firm that shows up in Boston Magazine and Cape Cod Life credit lines alongside named architects and builders on multimillion-dollar estate projects.

Its nine Google reviews, all five stars, run from 2024 into mid-2025. Clients describe a design process built on listening: in a 2024 review, one homeowner said Bernice took what they wanted for their backyard and "made it better than we ever could have imagined," citing her choices on hardscape materials, a gunite pool surface, and plantings specifically. Another 2024 review credits the team with staying thorough and on top of every detail through a complex, multi-phase project while keeping communication clear. A pergola manufacturer that has partnered with the firm on several installations separately praised the collaborative work.

The press coverage adds context beyond the reviews: a 2018 Boston.com feature on a 5,700-square-foot coastal-bank home and a 2024 Cape Cod Life piece on a Hyannis Port historic-district remodel both quote Wahler describing her design approach directly. Separately, Cape News reported that Wahler personally bought and has been restoring the historic Shawme Pond boathouse in Sandwich since 2022, working with a preservationist and a master carpenter to study and rebuild its original arched openings — a project of her own, not client work, but one that speaks to the caliber of preservation work she does.

Her Houzz listing rounds out the service list: conservation permitting, conceptual design, contract documents, bidding and negotiation, and construction observation through garden aftercare — a full design-through-build-oversight offering rather than a planting-only service.

This is a fit for a substantial residential landscape design, especially one with historic, coastal, or conservation-permitting complexity, more than a routine lawn or planting job. With the review pool still on the smaller side, it's worth seeing a recent, comparable project in person before committing.

**Strengths:**
- Design process — clients describe collaborative listening that exceeded expectations
- Complex projects — praised for thoroughness and clear communication throughout
- Trade reputation — a pergola manufacturer praises repeated collaborative work
- Historic preservation — featured press coverage on high-profile Cape Cod restorations
