## The honest read

Calkins Electric is a Waterford electrician that says it serves homeowners and businesses across Southeastern Connecticut, and its website lists towns from New London and Groton to Old Saybrook and East Haddam. Its Connecticut electrician license, ELC.0183077-E1, is active on the state registry, with CHRISTOPHER M CALKINS as the holder of record.

It holds 4.9 stars from 236 Google ratings and 4.9 stars from 138 ratings on Angi. A recent customer said Calkins installed a whole house generator for them. A customer whose generator they installed said they just came back for the annual oil change. For a mini-split install, a customer said Calkins coordinated the electrical work with the HVAC mechanical contractor so the system was operational the same day. A customer who had power run for a new heat pump system said they also handled an outdoor outlet while at the house, and everything came in under the initial quote.

Mason and Kylee installed a new doorbell and chime, new thermostats, outlets and a washer/dryer vent in the basement for one customer. Aimee and Mason installed a ceiling fan and canned lights on a two-story ceiling, along with chandeliers, bathroom fixtures and sconces, for a customer who said they cleaned up after themselves. One customer said the electricians added a dimmer they had not asked for in advance.

In a 2025 review, a customer said Chris Calkin managed their changeover from oil heat to a new propane heating and hot water system and installed a whole house generator. A 2025 customer described a sub panel and an outdoor hookup for a heat pump with a service outlet. In a 2018 Angi review, a customer said Chris responded during a cold snap, temporarily replacing a Nest thermostat and turning on the furnace.

A recent customer who left one star said they were charged $260 an hour and billed for 8 hours when the electrician was at the home on camera for 6.5, and that the work was finished while they were not home. That customer still praised the electrician's skills. A 2023 customer said they were charged for 1.5 hours at $195 an hour for two technicians after a heater turned out to be powered by the furnace and was not repaired. A recent customer said the original bid was more than they anticipated, and the company worked with them to prioritize jobs.

**Strengths:**
- Generator installs — whole-house generators installed and serviced
- Mini-split coordination — wired with the HVAC contractor, operational same day
- Two-story lighting — ceiling fan, canned lights and chandeliers installed

**Concerns:**
- Hourly billing — a recent customer disputed 8 billed hours at $260/hour
- Incomplete repair charge — a 2023 customer was billed for an unfinished heater fix
