## The honest read

David J Smith Construction takes on the jobs that change a floor plan. The largest on its permit record is a $178,000 addition in Danvers in 2022 that brought a kitchen, a bath, a laundry and two bedrooms into the house; in 2019 the Methuen company turned a Newburyport two-family into two condo units, a $152,600 job.

Two of the five permits are smaller work. A 2024 Methuen permit covers an $11,500 kitchen-and-bath update — cabinets, flooring and paint, marked as no structural work — and a 2022 Everett renovation put in two fire-rated doors and a demising wall for $27,000. A Haverhill remodel in 2019 rounds out the five permits on the profile.

The company's Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, #141554, is active on the state registry, and BuildZoom lists a construction supervisor licence, CS-058994, alongside it — the usual pairing of a company registration and the supervisor of record. If what you are planning is an addition or a conversion in the Merrimack Valley rather than a single-room refresh, that is what these permits are made of; ask to see a finished addition close to yours in size, and settle who pulls the permits and meets the inspector before work starts.

**Strengths:**
- Additions and conversions — a $178,000 Danvers addition, a Newburyport condo conversion
- Active state registration — Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration verified active
- Whole-house scope — permits cover additions, conversions and interior renovations
