## The honest read

Martha's Vineyard Construction Company is an Edgartown builder of custom, high-end homes on the Island, working with architects and designers from concept through finish. Colin Whyte started the company in 1971 — Martha's Vineyard Magazine, marking its fiftieth anniversary in a 2021 feature, described him hauling trash off residential job sites as an undergrad before founding what became one of the Island's established builders; Vineyard Style Magazine's account adds that he started it with two camp roommates, Ross Gannon and Terry Mulcahey. On retiring, Whyte passed leadership to his daughters, Hilary Moore and Alison Thompson, and the company describes itself today as family-owned.

The reviews on file, all from 2017 and 2020, come mostly from people who worked alongside the company rather than homeowners directly: a design professional who called the work "right the first time and every time" across multiple projects, and a high-end cabinet firm that praised the project managers and onsite supervisors as "steady, creative, and quick thinkers" across several complex Vineyard builds. A 2017 Houzz review named project manager Drew Cathey specifically for being easy to work with on a custom home on the south coast. On Houzz, the company holds a 5.0-star average from four reviews and has picked up five Houzz Awards, with 17 project galleries showing typical job costs from $100,000 to $15 million.

One thing worth knowing: the company's Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, verified against the state registry, has expired. Whether that matters for the scope of work you're planning is worth asking about directly.

Given the size and cost of the projects this company takes on — custom homes and major remodels running into the millions — it's the kind of builder suited to a serious ground-up or whole-house project on the Vineyard, not a small repair job, and worth confirming current licensing status and availability before committing.

**Strengths:**
- Praised by trade partners — steady, reliable project management
- Consistent quality — right the first time, per a repeat client

**Concerns:**
- Registration expired — MA HIC license verified lapsed
