## The honest read

Rotted wood is the job that keeps bringing people to Brian Riley. A Salem homeowner writing in r/SalemMA this summer said he replaced every piece of rotted wood on their house and rebuilt an oddly sized front door and transom, and kept them posted on progress the whole way. Riley Home Improvements is Brian's one-owner shop at 12 Lemon Street in Salem; the company says it works Salem, Marblehead, Danvers and Byfield, and its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active.

The written history is short but consistent: four Google reviews since early 2025, all five stars, and a 5.0 average from four ratings. The details line up with the Reddit account. In a February 2025 review, a homeowner described an exterior rot repair where Brian kept the historical trim detailing intact; another from the same month listed roof repairs, support-column installation, window replacement and new construction across several projects and said he left the work area spotless. The most recent review, from May 2026, is about finish carpentry and goes on at length about the precision of the cuts and corners.

The company's own site lists a broader menu — decks, siding, windows, and kitchen or bathroom remodels — but the people who have written about hiring him describe carpentry and exterior repair, not full-room renovations. One 2025 reviewer said they planned to come back for a bathroom remodel, which is the closest anyone gets to describing that kind of project.

A good call for rot repair, trim and finish carpentry, and window or exterior work on an older Salem-area house. If you are after a full kitchen or bath, ask for a completed example before booking, since that side of the business has no written history yet.

**Strengths:**
- Rot repair — Reddit and Google accounts describe whole-house wood replacement
- Finish carpentry — May 2026 reviewer praised precise cuts and corners
- Historical detailing — kept period trim intact during a 2025 exterior repair
- Communication — Reddit commenter cited steady progress updates
- Active HIC registration — Massachusetts registration verified active

**Concerns:**
- Kitchen and bath remodels — offered on the site, no written customer account yet
