Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active, and the firm focuses on custom homes, additions and renovations in the $400,000-to-$4-million range, per its own Houzz profile. The written record is uniformly strong, though entirely dated — eight Houzz reviews running from 2012 to a last one in August 2018, several from other design and construction professionals rather than typical homeowners. A structural engineer who works with dozens of contractors called Tom 'about the best designer I've worked with' and chose SBI to renovate his own home; a HERS energy rater who has inspected many of the firm's projects over a decade called it one of the best in Greater Boston for single-family work. Homeowner accounts describe gut renovations in historic districts that kept original character intact while updating the layout for modern living, a custom addition matched to a first-period home, and — in a 2016 review — a client who hired the firm twice a decade apart, first for a small playroom addition and later to replace an aging ranch with a 5,000-square-foot colonial. A 2012 review, describing a from-scratch new build on a demolished lot, credited weekly budget spreadsheets and regular meetings for keeping the project low-stress. There's nothing negative in the record — every review runs five stars — though it's worth noting directly that the newest one dates to 2018; confirming current capacity and timelines is a reasonable first step before committing to a project. Saltsman Brenzel fits homeowners planning a serious custom build, a historic renovation, or a large addition who want architecture and construction under one team, based on how consistently both clients and outside design professionals describe the caliber of the design and the craftsmanship. **Strengths:** - Design-build in one shop — architecture and construction handled together - Preserves historic character — gut renovations that keep period features intact - Professional peer endorsements — engineers and energy consultants vouch for the work - Transparent costs — accurate upfront pricing without late surprises ## Claims & citations Every claim below is backed by real evidence rows — uncited claims are dropped in code before publication. - Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration verified active _(confidence: high)_ - [State License Registry](https://contractorhub.mass.gov/s/hic-contractor-search) — “MA hic license 132847 registry-verified active — registry holder of record: SALTSMAN BRENZEL DESIGN CONSTRUCTION, INC.” - Houzz rating of 5.0 stars from 8 ratings _(confidence: high)_ - [Houzz](https://www.houzz.com/professionals/home-builders/saltsman-brenzel-inc-pfvwus-pf~436696846) — “Houzz: 5.0★ from 8 ratings” - Incorporated in 2001 with Boston project roots dating to the 1990s _(confidence: medium)_ - [Official Website](http://www.saltsmanbrenzel.com) — “Company history (self-reported): Tom Saltsman and Jason Brenzel built projects around Boston from 1994 to 2001 and incorporated as SaltsmanB…” - A structural engineer who works with dozens of contractors chose them for his own home _(confidence: medium)_ - [Houzz](https://www.houzz.com/professionals/home-builders/saltsman-brenzel-inc-pfvwus-pf~436696846) — “5★ As a Structural Engineer I work with dozens of contractors.
