## The honest read

Shea Roofing Co is a family-run roofing contractor with locations on Foster Street in Salem and Echo Avenue in Beverly, Massachusetts, serving North Shore towns from Marblehead to Gloucester. The company says it was founded in 1954 by Bill Shea Sr., a Navy veteran who moved from house building into roofing, and that his son Bill Shea Jr. has run it since 2000. It handles roof replacement and repair, storm-damage work, gutters, and roofing on historical homes, and BuildZoom shows 24 permitted strip-and-re-roof jobs in Danvers, Peabody, Beverly and Middleton between 2008 and 2023.

Homeowners who hired them describe an owner who is hands-on from the first visit. In a 2023 Google review a customer who had a new roof put on their house and garage, including removal of two chimneys, said Bill Shea surveyed the job on day one, explained everything that needed doing, and left shingle samples to choose from. A January 2023 reviewer with a small leak after a storm said Shea inspected the roof, gave honest feedback that it likely did not need replacing, and identified the leak's cause instead. A 2022 Angi customer who had an EPDM flat roof replaced praised properly done flashing and thorough cleanup, and a 2017 reviewer noted that Bill did a small repair himself rather than passing on a job most companies would consider too minor.

The same notes repeat across the older accounts: on-time arrival, clean work, fair pricing, and easy communication, in Angi reviews from 2017 and 2018. Google rates the company 5 stars from 8 ratings and Angi 4.8 from 9, with 10 written reviews between 2017 and 2023. It holds an A+ grade and has been BBB accredited since 2011.

The main thing to sort out before signing is paperwork. BuildZoom lists an active Massachusetts Home Improvement Contractor licence (#168449, issued January 2026) alongside an older one (#153018) marked inactive and once cancelled, and the Angi and HomeAdvisor pages self-report a separate construction supervisor licence, CS-103580, expiring in March 2027. The Angi listing also says the company offers no free estimates, no emergency service, and no warranties, which is worth confirming directly given that reviewers describe a responsive small-job approach.

This is a strong fit for a North Shore homeowner who wants a long-established local roofer for a full re-roof, a flat-roof replacement, or an honest opinion on a leak. Ask for the current licence numbers in writing and confirm the estimate and warranty terms up front.

**Strengths:**
- Hands-on owner — Bill Shea surveys jobs and does small repairs himself
- Honest leak diagnosis — a 2023 reviewer was told not to replace
- Clean, timely work — proper flashing and thorough cleanup cited
- Fair pricing — 2018 Angi reviewers called pricing excellent
- Permit history — 24 permitted re-roofs across four towns since 2008

**Concerns:**
- No free estimates — Angi listing states none offered, confirm directly
- No warranties stated — Angi FAQ says none offered
- Older licence cancelled — BuildZoom shows one inactive HIC licence

**Where sources disagree:**
- Tenure is stated four ways: BBB lists the business as started in 1953, the website says founded in 1954 with 72 years in business, the Angi About text says a family tradition since 1946, and the Angi highlights field says 23 years of experience.
- Two Massachusetts Home Improvement Contractor licences appear on BuildZoom: #168449 active (issued January 2026) and #153018 inactive and once cancelled; Angi and HomeAdvisor self-report a different number, CS-103580.
- HomeAdvisor's 4.8 from 9 ratings mirrors the Angi page exactly, so the two listings reflect one set of nine reviews rather than eighteen.
- BBB and the website list the primary address on Foster Street in Salem while BuildZoom lists Echo Avenue in Beverly; BBB shows both as locations.
