## The honest read

Sutherland Construction is a Charlotte company that describes itself on Houzz as a residential building, remodeling and restoration company, with bathrooms, kitchens and additions named as its focus. Its own website says it has been in business 14 years and that, on larger remodels, it works alongside an architect or design professional. On Houzz it holds a 5.0 rating from 10 ratings.

A 2014 customer wrote that Damien modified existing cabinets, built new cabinets, installed major appliances and coordinated an electrician and plumber during a kitchen remodel. That 2014 customer said the job ended up very close to the original budget and time schedule.

A 2014 customer described a fireplace demo and reconstruction and said they noticed no dust outside the project area. In a 2014 review, a customer with a rental unit said Damien took charge of hiring the plumber for an unexpected bathroom problem while they were traveling. A 2014 customer who hired Damien Helem said the work covered a bathroom renovation, ceiling repair and a new closet installation.

A 2016 customer said Sutherland renovated a master bath and a children's bathroom. A 2016 reviewer described a substantial remodel that turned out to be a relatively complicated job and said Sutherland stayed very close to budget despite the surprises. That 2016 reviewer also wrote that Sutherland is not likely to be the lowest number when taking multiple bids.

**Strengths:**
- Kitchen remodel — a 2014 customer described new cabinets and coordinated trades
- A dust-free fireplace job — a 2014 customer noticed no dust outside the work area
- A remodel near budget — a 2016 customer said surprises did not sink the budget

**Concerns:**
- Bid price — a 2016 customer said it is not likely the lowest number
