## The honest read

Unity Heat Pumps describes itself on the Better Business Bureau as an installer of heat pump (mini-split) heating and cooling systems for homes and businesses. On Google it holds 4.7 stars from 30 ratings, and its BBB grade is A+.

A recent customer said Unity installed 3 mini splits in a few days and offered to clean up the walls once they were done. At an occupied rental building, a recent customer said James and his team did all 6 units and coordinated access directly with the tenants. A recent reviewer said Unity Heat Pumps installed roofs for two heat pump condensers and arrived on time. In a big old Victorian house, a recent customer said heat pumps on each floor meant "Less oil, less AC units."

A 2024 customer said James and Nick made a site visit within days of being contacted and gave a detailed estimate during that first visit. A 2025 customer said James installed a heat pump and a high-efficiency water heater, and came right away when a small problem came up a few weeks later.

A recent 1-star reviewer, whose landlord hired the company for a business space, said the AC system it installed would not bring the temperature below 80 degrees, that other AC contractors said it was undersized, and that the install caused ceiling, wall and floor damage. A 2025 reviewer said one of two heat pumps installed in 2023 still had not worked by February 2024, and that James said he had filed a warranty claim when he had not. That reviewer said a second contractor found problems with connections, wires, voltage and refrigerant, and that James had used 110v wires where 220v wiring was needed. A 2025 commenter on Reddit's r/vermont wrote "avoid unity, heat pumps like the plague."

**Strengths:**
- Mini-split installs — a recent customer said 3 went in within a few days
