Last 6 months: 2 reviews, 2 negative. ## The honest read York Building & Remodeling is a Sandwich contractor Matt York has run since 2008, and its deepest track record is a run of detailed Houzz reviews from 2018 through 2020: clients who say they interviewed several builders first, then chose York for its communication, attention to detail, and — in one case — delivering a custom-built house on time and on budget. A 2022 Cape Cod Life feature backs that up with a specific, architect-collaborated project that started in 2018 and brought York on as builder the following year. That history sits against a more recent and more troubling one. In two Google reviews from 2026, neighbors near an active demolition say the company had no dust or debris containment in place and skipped other safety and environmental precautions that would have cost little to add. A separate 2023 review describes a company truck tailgating and then passing dangerously. The company's Massachusetts home improvement contractor licence (HIC 162640, held by Matthew York) is verified active with the state, and BuildZoom independently shows both that licence and York's construction supervisor licence active as of 2026 — the paperwork side of the business checks out even as the recent site-conduct complaints raise real questions. Anyone considering a project here should ask specifically about current safety and dust-control practices on active job sites, especially for any demolition work, and weigh that against the substantial, credible remodel history behind the name. **Strengths:** - Deep remodel history — years of detailed Houzz reviews praising craftsmanship and communication - Architect-vetted project — a 2022 Cape Cod Life feature on a multi-year collaborative build **Concerns:** - Recent safety complaints — 2026 reviewers say demolition dust and debris weren't contained - Reckless driving report — a 2023 review describes a company truck passing dangerously **Where sources disagree:** - Google's recent rating (2.3★) is markedly lower than Houzz's (5.0★); the Houzz reviews are older (2018–2020) and the negative Google reviews are recent (2023, 2026), so the two records reflect different periods rather than a direct disagreement. ## Claims & citations Every claim below is backed by real evidence rows — uncited claims are dropped in code before publication. - Holds an active Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration (HIC 162640), verified against the state registry, with Matthew York as the license holder of record. _(confidence: high)_ - [State License Registry](https://contractorhub.mass.gov/s/hic-contractor-search) — “MA hic license 162640 registry-verified active — registry holder of record: MATTHEW YORK” - Founded in 2008 by Matthew York, per its Houzz profile, working across Cape Cod. _(confidence: medium)_ - [Houzz](https://www.houzz.com/professionals/general-contractors/york-building-and-remodeling-pfvwus-pf~1261260158) — “A Houzz pro profile for York Building & Remodeling of Sandwich, MA, rated 5.0 from 5 reviews, stating the firm was established in 2008 and i…” - [Houzz](https://www.houzz.com/professionals/general-contractors/york-building-and-remodeling-pfvwus-pf~1261260158) — “Houzz profile matches this business (phone 774-413-5497, website yorkbuildingcapecod.com, HIC 162640, Sandwich MA): rated 5.0 from 5 reviews…” - Houzz reviews from 2018 through 2020 describe clients who interviewed several contractors before choosing York for its communication, attention to detail, and delivering a custom-built home on time and on budget. _(confidence: high)_ - [Houzz](https://www.houzz.com/professionals/general-contractors/york-building-and-remodeling-pfvwus-pf~1261260158) — “5★ York Building and Remodeling does not disappoint!
