LDa is an architecture and interior design firm, not a builder — you hire them to draw the thing, then hire someone to build it. Founded in 1992 and working out of a studio in Boston's South End, the practice spans houses, multi-family and affordable housing, schools, churches and commercial interiors, and its own site says it has moved to employee ownership. The design press has kept up with them better than the review sites have. Architectural Digest featured a renovated Beacon Hill home of theirs in April 2026, reworked for a growing family without losing the house's character. Boston Magazine named them 2023 Best Transitional Architect. And in September 2024 the New England Real Estate Journal reported the firm joining forces with interior design practice Charles Street Design. The written customer record, by contrast, is old: 13 reviews running 2013 to 2018 and nothing since. They are uniformly positive, and the specific ones carry the weight. In a December 2017 review, a homeowner described a kitchen and living-room renovation with designer Carter Williams and singled out being walked through the trade-offs between pricier and cheaper options — and Williams being "polite but firm with the contractor when issues arose." A July 2017 reviewer said Dean Sawyer introduced contemporary elements into an Arts and Crafts house that still harmonized with it, and stayed reachable through construction. A March 2014 couple described a full gut renovation of a colonial in which the firm handled contractor bids and their move-in. One thing to weigh: four of the eleven Houzz reviews were written by industry partners — a design publication, a realtor, a builder and a shutter company — rather than by homeowners. On BBB the firm carries an A+ but is not accredited, which is a distinction worth keeping straight. For a substantial renovation or a from-scratch house where the design is the hard part, LDa's published work is deep and current even though the customer reviews are not. Ask which architect and which interior designer would actually run your project, and settle early where their role ends and your general contractor's begins.
