Ten Google reviews, every one of them five stars, and most describe the same kind of job: gutting and reimagining a century-old Somerville two-family. Mix Design and Development — which trades as Mix Design Studio — is an architecture practice rather than a construction crew, and that distinction matters. Homeowners hire Damon Sidel to draw the thing; their builder puts it up. Sidel founded the firm in 2017, according to its website, after two decades in architecture that included a Harvard Graduate School of Design Master of Architecture and a stint at Safdie Architects. Architect Gregory Mathieu joined in 2020. Alongside architecture, the practice lists interior design, exhibition design, and consulting on a property's potential before you buy or lease. What clients keep describing is patience under constraint. In a November 2025 review, a couple renovating a 110-year-old two-family said they arrived with ambitious plans, had to pare them back once the overall costs came into focus, and that Sidel sat with them making adjustments on the fly so they could picture what fit the budget. A March 2024 client on a gut renovation described being walked through a zoning variance application and a basement-unit conversion. A February 2025 client reported fees given upfront and the project finished on budget, with the firm sourcing survey plans and contractors and handling the local authorities. The endorsement that carries the most unusual weight came from the other side of the job. In a May 2025 review, a builder called Mix a preferred firm within their organization and credited the drawings with supplying what's needed to execute efficiently. A January 2024 homeowner said much the same thing secondhand — their builders remarked on how detailed the drawings were, which made a gut renovation and extension go smoothly. Word of mouth is thinner but points the same direction: a commenter in r/Somerville recommended Sidel in July 2024 as a Somerville resident who understands how to work in the city. Two things to weigh before calling. Every review on file is a Google review, and the newest dates to November 2025 — ten comments across 2024 and 2025 is the whole written history. And this is a design engagement, not a build one: you will still be hiring a builder, so ask early how far the drawings go and how Mix works with the contractor. For a whole-house renovation, an addition, or a variance-dependent conversion on a tight urban lot, this is a firm whose clients and their builders both say the drawings hold up. Pin down the fee structure and the scope of the drawing set before you sign.
“Mixed design studios, Damon Sidel. Somerville resident and understands how to work in the city”
“I work with Damon Sidel of Mix Design and Development for my design/architecture work. He has great ideas, and my clients have been happy with his designs.”
We worked with Damon at Mix Design and Development as part of a major renovation of our 110 year old 2-family home in Somerville. We started out with ambitious plans but had to pare back some of our ideas once we began to understand the overall costs. Damon was incredibly patient throughout that entire process, sitting with us and making adjustments on the fly so that we could visualize what was possible within our budget. In the end, Damon helped us make improvements to almost every room in the house, with an emphasis on an entirely new downstairs kitchen and bathroom, both of which our friends now rave about. Damon’s creativity, combined with his willingness to listen to our needs, contributed to a beautiful final design that we are thrilled with. Damon’s attention to detail, his organizational skills, and his knowledge around construction and building codes made our job as homeowners so much easier throughout the entire renovation. In the end we have a beautiful home and couldn’t be more grateful for Damon’s help in making that possible.
We started working with Damon in 2023 shortly after purchasing our first home. After 10 years of renting the upper unit of a typical Philly-style duplex in Somerville, we were able to purchase the 2-unit property from our landlord. The building was built around 1910. It was well cared for but was almost completely original except for a 30-year old simple rennovation of the kitchen in the upper unit and the bathrooms in both units. The foundation was failing, the HVAC situation barely kept the house comoftable, the elecrical wiring was stil wrapped in fabric from the early 1900s -- the house needed work. We decided to take on a massive renovation to make our house work for our family of four - and to ensure the house will stand for another 100 years. We connected with Damon at the very beginning of the project. We had a basic idea of what we wanted - to open up the space and convert the building to maintain a 2-bed room, 1 bathroom unit on the first floor while expanding the second unit to take over the full second floor of the building. We also knew we need to address the failing foundation. Damon helped us think through the big picture of our project and brought our discussions to life with quick turnarounds on renders of the space. Damon also got down into the weeds and helped us think through the minor details -- the details that matter from a architectural and ease of use perspective as well as the details that matter from an aesthetic perspective. It seemed like Damon had all the right things to consider when making the decisions. He had so many of the answers about the minutae of taking on this kind of project - he knew when to flag things for concern to double check with the contractor or city inspectors. And, when he didn't know the answer, he knew the right people and contractors to connect us to. Damon was also an excellent communicator and an incredible organizer of information. And, Damon manages a really great team -- his colleague Gregory helped throughout the process and was just as polite, professional, and detail oriented as Damon. Mix Design makes for a great team! We couldn't be happier with how our home turned out. Damon helped bring our vision to life in a way that would have been impossible for us to do alone. We would absolutley work with Damon and the Mix Design team again, and we recommend them to our friends when they're thinking about their own projects.
We just completed a major renovation and addition to our 2-family home, designed by Mix, and we are delighted with our new home. Damon's design incorporated our vision for the project along with some clever, functional and creative ideas. Damon and his team worked closely with our builder to solve all of the many little problems that come with bringing a 180-year-old house into the 21st century. We'll be enjoying the results for years to come.
We have had the privilege of collaborating with Damon and Gregory of Mix Design Studio on several substantial projects and have consistently regarded them as a preferred firm within our organization. Their designs are captivating, they furnish the requisite information for efficient execution, and they demonstrate exceptional responsiveness and ease of collaboration. All the projects we have collaborated on have concluded successfully, and our, the builder’s, perspective is valued and respected. We cannot recommend this firm highly enough. We eagerly anticipate future collaborations with them. Timothy Schiefer President Schiefer Woodworking Inc
We have worked with Mix Design and Development on a house project and we are highly recommending his expertise and services. During our initial onsite consultation, it was clear that Damon was very knowledgeable and was open to discussing the specifics of our project. Damon and his team can assist along the whole project, including the sourcing of the survey plans and contractors, as well as engaging with the local authorities and consultants. They are very professional, yet very personable and friendly. The fees were provided upfront and the project was done on budget. The project was a huge success and we are very happy with the final result. We highly recommend working with Damon and his team at Mix Design and Development.
