Patrick Ahearn Architect is a Boston firm on Newbury Street that designs classic American houses — historic restorations of landmarked homes and new construction in the New England vernacular. Its founder, Patrick Ahearn, is an AIA Fellow, and the firm says it has worked in that style for more than four decades, with 16 architects now under the name; the BBB lists the LLC as incorporated in 2009 with nine employees and grades it A+ without accrediting it. The written record is dated but consistent. In a 2014 review, a homeowner who had a complete gut renovation and addition on a 1930s house said the firm nailed it and kept the character they wanted. Colonial Reproductions, a builder that wrote in 2014 after working with Ahearn for almost twenty years, praised his eye for detail and his ability to tell a story through a design. A 2016 client described clear expectations, high-quality craftsmen and a project finished on time. Houzz shows a 4.8-star average across 22 reviews and 68 published projects, with a typical job cost the profile puts at $1 million to $10 million. The dissent is worth reading before you call. A two-star Houzz reviewer in December 2020 described beautiful design and work, but said the firm was extremely challenging to work with, hard to give feedback to — "his way or the highway" — and outrageously expensive, advising anyone on a budget not to bother. That is one account, and it sits against a run of praise, but it lines up with the profile's own million-dollar-plus project range: this is a high-end practice, and the cost and the strength of the design point of view are both real. BuildZoom's permit records show a light recent footprint — six listed projects, one permit in 2024 and two in 2023 — which fits an architect whose drawings are built by other people's crews rather than a contractor pulling its own permits. They are the right call for a landmarked restoration or a custom house where the architecture is the point and the budget can carry it. If you have a fixed budget or want a collaborator who will fold in your changes as you go, ask directly how the firm handles client revisions, and get the fee structure in writing before you start.
“Don't expect Patrick Ahearn quality for work from an average guy.”
Beautiful design and work but extremely challenging to work with. Huge ego and difficulty incorporating client suggestions and feedback. “His way or the highway.” Outrageously expensive. If you have any kind of budget don’t bother.
Our experience working with Patrick Ahearn and his office was fantastic! We were asked for our wishes, given clear expectations, they hired excellent quality craftsmen, finished the project in a timely manner, and we have been thrilled living in the space ever since! We appreciated his professionalism, taste, and enjoyed his personality! We highly recommend them!
The great creative force in New England. Followed his work for nearly ten years - impressed. Look up their work on their homepage.
Our company, Colonial Reproductions, Inc. has been privileged to work with Patrick on many projects for almost 20 years. PA's eye for detail and his ability to tell a story through his design is spot-on. He exemplifies classic, historically motivated architecture that our clients are drawn to.
Complete gut renovation/addition. They nailed it! We got exactly what we wanted and what we expected. We wanted to maintain the character and charm of our 1930's house and they did a fantastic job. They incorporated most of our needs and many of our wants that were outline from day one. We couldn't be happier.. Thank you Patrick and Mike.
