Red Barn Architecture

We had an all-around fantastic experience with Red Barn on our home renovation project. Having interviewed several architects locally, Ryan, Caitlin and team treated our project as if it was their own, thinking through each detail, presenting multiple design options for us to consider, keeping a keen eye on project timeline and budget, and helping solve the inevitable snafus that come into play on every renovation. We would definitely use Red Barn again and highly recommend them!

Red Barn was a great partner from start to finish on our project. Ryan really listened to all that we wanted to accomplish with our new building and he put those big ideas into a workable, innovative, and stylish plan. We were hoping to achieve a contemporary structure that would fit well with our c. 1905 home situated just 15 feet away. We had some challenging engineering issues and Ryan was able to develop creative solutions to help us with those and to save our 100 year old trees in the yard. Red Barn worked seamlessly with our builders and were very responsive to all the unexpected things that inevitably come up during a build. And when it came to the interior design, Red Barn was right there for us again. To have both architecture and interior design services under the same roof was amazing. We were all on the same page, or turning that page together. And Caitlin was able to introduce us to woodworkers who built the perfectly-sized, single-slab, live-edge, drop-leaf table for our space which is the new home to many large family gatherings. We could not be more pleased with the outcome and it all started with choosing Red Barn!

Red Barn Architecture was essential to the success of our small, but complex, historic renovation in Salem, MA. After a decade in our 1100sqft antique home, we were starting to outgrow the space. On top of that, many aspects of the home were in dire need of being replaced. Finding Red Barn’s site and portfolio, we knew they’d be the right team to help bring our vision to life. After our first phone call with Ryan we were sold and ready to move forward! Historic renovations always present challenges, and with a dense neighborhood like ours, it can be even more complicated. Red Barn helped us carefully navigate all the city zoning laws and meetings to create a more functional home that fit within the tight limitations. Even though we’re not in a designated historic district, Red Barn’s thoughtful design still retained the vernacular of the time period the home was built. Red Barn played an active role in helping us find the right builder, and provided detailed construction documents that proved essential in the bidding phase, and throughout the construction. Ryan and team were also prompt in troubleshooting structural issues that came up once we got into discovery and demolition. The end result is a home that is uniquely ours, structurally solid, and retains all the charm and detail of a nearly 200 year old home. We couldn’t have done it without the Red Barn Architecture team!

Ryan and his team designed our dream house at Chebacco lake. It was a fantastic experience to work with him. He came with great ideas, communicated very well with us and helped us in many ways to take this project across the finish line. We could not have found a better architect.

We hired the team at Red Barn to do our extensive home addition and renovation of an old small Cape that needed a lot of love. Ryan and his team’s design and attention to detail made our process as smooth and painless as I could’ve asked for. Their services were worth every penny. From getting the plot and zoning information, to sitting before the zoning board, to designing what we envisioned and then being there for all questions and new discoveries that arose as we tore apart the old house - they were outstanding. Professional, friendly, knowledgeable, easy to work with, easy to communicate with etc. Even our GC complimented his team and has since collaborated on other projects with Red Barn. Highly recommend!
