Bartsch Landscape Architecture is not the crew that turns up with shovels — it is the firm that draws the plan they follow. Its Houzz listing puts a typical project between $75,000 and $10 million, billed hourly until the scope is clear and then at a fixed fee. What stands out in the reviews is who wrote them. Three of the six come from people in the trade rather than homeowners. A landscape installer who has both built Bartsch designs and hired him to draw them called him serious about producing the best possible result for his clients. An ironworker who fabricated a fence and arch for a small park in downtown Nantucket credited him, in a 2013 review, with coordinating the several contractors involved and the client's payments. The owner of Nicholas Ferrantella Landscaping wrote that year that across 33 years and many architects, Bartsch was their favourite. That is a particular kind of endorsement — from the people who have to build the drawings. Homeowners describe it from the other side. A couple who had cleared more than an acre of woodland wrote in May 2013 that he showed them how small changes in grade and a few minimal features could turn cleared land into a destination, and that he was efficient with time and resources. Another that September praised his grasp of which plants would actually survive on Nantucket. Two things to weigh. The written record has gone quiet — the newest review dates to August 2018, so there is nothing current to judge today's turnaround or fees by. And the licence numbers on show, Massachusetts landscape architect #1137 and New Hampshire #217, come from the company's own Houzz listing rather than a check against the state board; that same listing marks its Massachusetts construction supervisor licence as former. On the other side of the ledger, the Better Business Bureau has accredited the business since July 2021 and grades it A+. The right call if you have a difficult site and want a designed, permitted plan before anyone digs. Ask for references from the last year or two, and confirm the registration with the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Landscape Architects yourself.

He is extremely knowledgeable about the genre of landscape architecture, contemporary construction processes & materials, and plants. I was hired by David Bartsch to fabricate an iron fence and arch for a small park in downtown Nantucket. David worked with me to facilitate the refining of the plans and logistics that come with any project. His design was clear and elegant, and joined the necessary historical concerns with a modern interpretation. He was instrumental in coordinating the several contractors involved and also with payment from the client. The project was successful and is an example of how, with a committed effort among professionals, a project with the necessary demands of town politics and community concerns can be realized successfully. David was an asset in developing a plan for our back yard on Nantucket. He was knowledgable about the various species of flora and their ultimate success in such an environment. Services were timely, professional, and courteous.
We hired David Bartsch after clearing more than an acre of previously wooded property. Our intention was to create a "yard" out of the newly available grounds. After speaking with David, we discovered that with a bit of planning, we could easily transform the property into a purposeful, attractive landscape. With his help, we were able to make our 1.5 acres into a destination rather than cleared land. He thoughtfully explained how small changes in grade and minimal features create zones of use, which make a space more meaningful and useful. He was very efficient with time and resources, as well as familiar with many contractors which created many options in terms of scale and cost of certain features. We view hiring David Bartsch as a solid investment, as well as a good choice for our landscape design needs. A+
