Apex Carpentry LLC is a family-run general contractor at 29 Bates Rd in Swampscott, established in 1988 and incorporated in Massachusetts in 2004. The Better Business Bureau records it as an eight-person LLC owned by John and Louis Spagnoli, also trading as Apex Contracting. The Massachusetts registry verifies its Home Improvement Contractor registration, number 123150, as active — a confirmed credential rather than a self-report. The written reviews are excellent and they are old, all posted between March and June 2015. In a June 2015 review a homeowner described Apex building a fully custom home and said that a year after moving in the firm still responded immediately and came over to sort out small items. Another June 2015 client traced a sequence of jobs — custom deck benches and a floor-to-ceiling walnut fireplace wall, then a gutted kitchen and dining room, then a master closet with bedroom and bathroom — and said the firm stayed on budget, told her how changes would affect the bottom line before doing the work, and cleaned up at the end of every day. She also said plainly that they are not the cheapest bid. An April 2015 reviewer credited John Spagnoli and his project managers with finishing on schedule and with the detail on custom millwork. What is current is the permit record. BuildZoom shows 17 permitted projects and a score of 101, placing the firm in the top 12% of Massachusetts licensed contractors, with a $1,177,705 addition, siding, trim and window renovation in Marblehead permitted in 2024 and a $467,900 Marblehead addition in 2023. Houzz puts the typical job range at $1,000 to $4 million. Two things to weigh. A database of U.S. Department of Labor enforcement records reports an OSHA inspection at a Marblehead residential remodelling site, opened in March 2010, that produced two citations and $1,050 in proposed penalties. And the ownership record is not consistent — BBB names the Spagnolis while BuildZoom also names Bruce Mccarthy as an owner. A sound choice for a substantial custom job — an addition, a whole-house renovation, custom millwork or cabinetry — where craftsmanship matters more than the lowest number. Ask for recent references rather than relying on the 2015 reviews, and confirm registration 123150 against the state registry when you call.
“According to U.S. Department of Labor enforcement records, APEX CARPENTRY LLC — a residential remodelers facility located at 9 AUBURNDALE ROAD, MARBLEHEAD, MA 01945 — was the subject of a formal OSHA inspection that resulted in 2 citation(s) and cumulative proposed penalties of $1,050.00. The inspection case was opened on 2010-03-18.”
Apex Carpentry built our dream home and we could not be happier! It was a very, very long and involved project as every aspect of the home is entirely custom. The details are fabulous and the Spagnoli's truly care about their customers. In fact they are still around for me even a year after moving in. Whenever I call, they respond immediately and often come over to take care of a small thing here or there. A VERY important attribute when engaging in a relationship with a contractor is this - trustworthiness. I cannot emphasize enough that doing business with Apex will be doing business with good, honest people.
My relationship with Apex started by having them build custom deck benches and refacing the wall of my fireplace with Walnut from floor to ceiling. I thought for sure this project was too small for them to accept, they took me on as a client and treated the job as it was the most important job they had. A year later we gutted our kitchen/ dining room and the year after we added on a master closet and updated our bedroom and bathroom all with Apex. I LOVE working with the APEX team, they are a family business and you can tell. They want to make you happy- PERIOD. They are not the cheapest bid BUT they will give you what you pay for. They show up. They perform. They know how to manage a production schedule. They take responsibility for what they have to do. They are masters in their craft and take pride in their work. They stayed on budget and informed me when I made changes how that would affect me in bottom line before they would do the work. and....They always cleaned up at the end of every day. But, most importantly to me, was that they listened to me and what I wanted, it was a true partnership. I would tell John, " you guys are dream makers". Everything I wanted happened, even things I didn't know that I wanted- happened. How many people can say that they enjoyed the experience of home remodel while living through it?
Apex Carpentry truly cares about and takes pride in the quality of its work. John Spagnoli was amazing to work with and has a superb team of project managers. He was always courteous and completed the job on schedule. John's attention to detail with both the project timeline and custom millwork details brought the project to a higher level.
Apex did my kitchen and living area renovation. They did a beautiful job! Craftsmanship, client relations, and project management were all excellent. Highly recommend this company!
