Fifty years of gardens, and the clearest picture of the work comes from a magazine and a single homeowner. New England Home covered a midcentury modern house on the North Shore in March 2021 and credited Barry Archung with the planting: he pruned the existing rhododendrons in a bedroom's pocket garden and added bamboo and a Dutch yew top-dressed with polished stones. That is the register the work seems to sit in — small, deliberate, plant-led. The one customer account, from November 2014, says much the same at length. A couple with a 1770 house in Marblehead's Old Town had a tiny pocket yard hemmed in by a parking lot on one side and a neighbouring house close on the other. They wrote that Archung finished when he said he would, comes back to work out why a plant is struggling and put it right, and promised something blooming in every season — which they said held true, and stayed low maintenance. His standing among peers turns up elsewhere. The Garden Conservancy credits him with designing an international collection of plant material in a stately park setting, and a garden designer who apprenticed at Barry Archung Fine Gardens for ten years from 1999 lists that training on his own site. The caution is simple arithmetic. There is one written review and it is from 2014, the Houzz profile names Marblehead as its only service area, and no licence or registration number is published anywhere. The right call for a designed, plant-driven garden on a difficult small site, particularly around a historic house. Ask for a couple of recent clients and check what registration he carries before work starts.

We have an historic home in Old Town located at 33 Franklin Street, Marblehead, MA. Our home was built in 1770. It has a very tiny pocket yard that backs up to a parking lot on one side and a house in extremely close proximity on our other side. The front yard is only a tiny walkway up to one of our front doors. Barry Archung did an outstanding job in his landscape design of both our front and backyards and our small driveway. It is a rare occasion when we are outside and people don't stop and comment on how absolutely beautiful our yard and house are. Visitors to Marblehead are constantly photographing our house as they walk down Franklin Street toward Fort Sewall and the harbor. It is truly Barry's design genius that has made our house the stand out that it is. Barry is very timely in his work. He completed the project when he said he would. He comes back whenever we have a problem with a plant to analyze the situation and remedy it. One of the things we liked best about Barry is that he said he would make sure that there is something blooming and beautiful in every season of the year. He is true to his word and our garden blooms with every season. It is unbelievably low maintenance as well. Not only is Barry a true and honest professional, but he is one of the finest persons you will ever meet.
