Berkshire Photovoltaic Services - BPVS - is one of the oldest solar names in the Berkshires. The BBB puts it at 41 years in business, started in June 1985 and incorporated as a corporation in 2016, run by owner Christopher Derbykilfoyle out of 60 Roberts Drive in North Adams. Its credentials are real and checkable. The Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration 131996 is active and held under the company's own name, BPVS Berkshire Photovoltaic Services Inc, and a construction supervisor licence, CS-073150, is active under Chris Derbykilfoyle. In 2017 the solar trade press reported that Panasonic Eco Solutions North America had picked BPVS as an authorized installer for its HIT module line. Kilfoyle turns up regularly as the local voice on solar policy, quoted by The Berkshire Edge in 2015 on net-metering caps and by the Berkshire Eagle in 2018 on the panel tariff. What is almost entirely missing is customers. There is exactly one review anywhere on file, on the BBB, and it is a complaint - undated, about roof panels installed incorrectly and the company declining responsibility for the damage. One review is not a pattern, but it is also not a record: nothing here can tell you how the last few years of jobs have actually gone. The BBB grades the file A+ while stating plainly that the business is not accredited, which are two different facts and neither is a customer verdict. A 2022 Reddit commenter suggested BPVS to someone shopping for a system in western Massachusetts, which is the only outside recommendation on file. Worth a call if you want a Berkshires firm with four decades of photovoltaic work and a verified state registration behind it. Because the written customer history is one negative review, ask for recent local references you can phone, ask specifically how they handle a callback on an installation problem, and get the workmanship warranty in writing.
