Bernice Wahler Landscapes works the hardest part of a Cape Cod property: the edge where a lot meets water, a conservation buffer, or a historic district. It is a landscape architecture studio in Sandwich with a second location in Duxbury, hired for the design and the drawings rather than for mowing, and its Houzz service list reads that way — conservation permitting, conceptual design, contract documents, bidding and negotiation, then construction observation and garden aftercare. That focus shows up in print. Boston.com described a 2018 project in which the studio had to settle a 5,700-square-foot house onto a quarter-acre lot against a protected coastal bank at Buzzards Bay; Cape Cod LIFE's 2024 feature covered a historic-district remodel in Hyannis Port; Boston Magazine credited the firm as landscape architect on Cape houses in 2020 and again this past May. Architects list it by name on their own project pages too. Sandwich's local paper also followed a project of Bernice Wahler's own in 2023 — the Shawme Pond boathouse she bought in October 2022, whose three windows she proposed taking back to their original arched openings before the historic committee. The homeowner side is smaller and uniformly warm: nine Google ratings, all five stars. The most detailed arrived in 2024. One client described a complete landscape renovation of an East Sandwich home, from the first calls through a design they said beat what they had pictured. Another walked through the hardscape materials, the gunite pool surface, and the plant and tree choices for a backyard, then said they had come back to have the front of the house done to match. A 2024 client on a long, complex project singled out communication that stayed timely and straightforward. A 2025 reviewer kept it to a line: a good eye, and knowledgeable. Two things are worth weighing. Seven of the nine reviews landed inside a two-week stretch at the end of May and start of June 2024, so the written history is one burst rather than a steady trickle — and two of those seven aren't homeowners at all: one is a pergola manufacturer describing collaborations on shared projects, the other a designer who worked with Bernice back in Chicago. Its Houzz profile carries five projects and no customer reviews. Massachusetts doesn't require home improvement contractor registration for landscaping-only work, so there is nothing to check on that front. This is the studio to call for a shoreline, conservation-constrained, or historic-district property where permitting and drawings matter as much as planting. Ask who would actually run your project day to day, and whether the fee covers construction observation through to aftercare.

“Landscape architect, Bernice Wahler of Bernice Wahler Landscapes of Sandwich says that when she was approached by a couple who wanted to remodel a historic, yet outdated home and landscape in part of Hyannis Port’s historic district into an expansive oasis for their family, she understood the importance of the couple’s Hyannis Port summer memories.”
““In our reconstruction and preservation, it has come to our attention that the three windows now existing in the boathouse used to be an entire arched opening area. Our application is instead of restoring it with the three windows, to restore it back to its original arch openings on both sides,” Ms. Wahler said.”
“Sandwich-based landscape architect Bernice M. Wahler, who purchased the boathouse in October 2022, has been working with master carpenter and Wing Fort House caretaker David S. Wheelock and historical preservationist Frederick H. Ecker to study the building for historical artifacts and features while it is being restored.”

Bernice made our backyard a beautiful and peaceful gathering spot for family and friends. The design process was easy, she listened to what we wanted and then made it better than we ever could have imagined. Her selections for the hardscape materials, the surface of the gunite pool, the choice of plants and trees are perfect! I am working with her now to make the front of our home match our backyard. Bernice is wonderful as is her staff, everyone is professional and responsive.
