Daryl Berg runs a one-person building business out of 9 Foss Terrace in Marblehead, and the jobs homeowners wrote about are the big ones: basements turned into finished living space, bathrooms rebuilt from bare walls. His Houzz page carries three reviews, all five stars, and all of them are old — the newest posted in March 2017. That March 2017 homeowner described a basement build-out with a bedroom, bathroom, bar, theater and gym, then called the quality "ok" after two years of work with Daryl. A February 2016 reviewer was warmer about a basement bathroom, crediting him with constant cleanup and close attention to the fine details, and describing his crew as pleasant to work with. A third, from June 2016, covered a handful of smaller projects around the outside of a house. The licensing picture is the thing to sort out before calling. BuildZoom shows a Massachusetts home improvement contractor number, 157715, listed as inactive with a 12-20-2013 expiration and a note that the status was at one point cancelled; BuildZoom says it last checked in March 2026 and still read it as expired. Houzz separately prints construction supervisor licence CS-104819 and an unnumbered "HIC" in an awards line. Those are directory claims, not state checks, and nothing here was confirmed against the registry. Remodeling and additions are not among the trades Massachusetts exempts from home improvement contractor registration, so ask him for the current number and look it up yourself with the Office of Consumer Affairs. The permit trail BuildZoom samples runs 2011 to 2015 and reaches well past the North Shore — jobs in Boston, Watertown and Tewksbury — which fits a builder who lists nineteen towns from Andover to Winthrop. His BBB file was opened in March 2014 and grades A+, though the same page states plainly that the business is not BBB accredited; those are two separate facts, not one endorsement. Berg is the call for a homeowner who wants a single owner-operator on a basement or bathroom conversion and can live with a written history that stops in 2017. Before signing, confirm the registration status directly with the state and get the schedule in writing — the one long timeline anyone wrote about is the detail worth pinning down.

Thank you Daryl for a beautiful job remodeling our basement bathroom. You took a cold, empty space and created a gorgeous spa-like room. Our basement is now completely functional as well as bright and modern. The job was done with constant clean up and Daryl was meticulous in the fine details. His team is professional and pleasant to work with. We never felt inconvenienced during the process. Thank you for a job well done!
