Doherty Plumbing is a Middleborough plumbing outfit that Angi and HomeAdvisor list for everyday and renovation work: faucet and fixture repairs, water heater installs, bathtub and shower installations, and plumbing tied to remodels and additions. The written record is short and split. A recent review describes a renovation job that went wrong in several ways: a new washing-machine line leaked into a closet after the crew caught wall insulation in the connection, an installed shower head that was never tested and didn't work, and a preexisting tub leak that reached the ceiling below. Older reviews tell a different story. In a 2025 review, a customer credited Tim with responding quickly after other companies wouldn't return calls and said they would use the company again. A 2024 review names Charlie and Colin, describing repeat plumbing work across two family homes and calling them honest, responsive and expert. And a 2023 review calls it the plumber the customer had used for six years, citing reasonable prices. Before booking, it's worth asking how the company handles quality control on multi-step installs, especially anything tied to a renovation — that's where the one detailed complaint on record centers. For straightforward repair and install work, the longer-tenured reviews point to a company some customers have stuck with for years.
“Charlie the plumber - it's just him and his son. Reliable and honest, pricing is very reasonable.”
You're going to ask me why I kept going back to C Doherty and it was because this is the plumber my contractor used for a renovation. Doherty seems nice but it was one mistake after another. First the team added a pipe for a washing machine and it leaked through my daughter's closet. The walls had to be opened up and it was discovered that they'd caught some wall insulation in the plumbing connection. Then they installed a shower head and it didn't work and no one tested it. There was a preexisting leak from the tub in another bathroom. The leak went through the ceiling of the hallway below. Doherty instructed me to purchase all new shower trim. It didn't fix the leak. (Seems like the lazy suggestion.) For four months, the shower continued to leak through our hallway ceiling. They said it was a caulk issue and recaulked. Still leaked. Finally one of the construction workers noticed that the tub overflow drain didn't have proper closures. That wasn't the fault of Doherty plumbing--it was a mistake that predated my owning the house--but it was frustrating that in 4 months and several visits, Doherty couldn't solve the problem and forced me to buy hundreds of dollars worth of unnecessary stuff. Then I noticed that the new front spigot they installed leaked. My contractor tried telling me that these spigots leak. I asked the plumber to take a look and in fact it was improperly installed and then fixed. Now, less than a year after it was installed it doesn't work at all. It's possible a shut off isn't on. They appear on, but I could be missing something. When I ask for help, Doherty told me that the plumber on his team who installed it now works in corrections and he has no idea what's wrong and to ask my contractor. Mind you, this is the plumber's work we're talking about. Owning a company means taking responsibility for the work of your employees. Finally, there was the case of my old house. Right after moving out, all the faucets at my old house stopped working. I was told they had been hit by sediment and that we needed to replace all the faucets. I purchased new faucets and paid for Doherty to install them along with a whole house water filter. A high expenditure. Same thing happened 6 months later. Turns out that while there was sediment, this wasn't primarily a sediment issue at all. The basement heater had been turned off and so the pipes were freezing. As soon as the new residents turned on the heater down there the water started flowing again. I had purchased all new faucets for no reason. Everyone makes mistakes, but this has been one mistake after another. And when I try to have mistakes resolved, Doherty doesn't take responsibility, telling me that the guys who did the work are gone. I hate to leave a negative review--my dad was a small business owner--but I'm tired of chasing people to get stuff fixed that should have been handled properly in the first place.
So I happy I found them, I live in Newport and nobody returns calls. Tim was just the best and went above and beyond! Using them again this month for another issue! I found my company!
Charlie and Colin have done many repairs and installations in two of our family homes. They are reliably, honest, trustworthy, responsive, kind and very expert. They are our go-to for plumbing work of all kinds. Thank you guys!
Best plumber I've used for about 6 years. Very reasonable prices.
