Elf's has been working the Seacoast since 1982 — landscaping, irrigation, hardscaping, lighting, property maintenance, snow and ice removal, plus a garden center people visit for plants. The company is family-owned, reports 40 years in business, and has additional locations in Portsmouth and Meredith, New Hampshire and Wells, Maine. Lennie Foss is listed as president, and the Better Business Bureau gives it an A+ on a non-accredited file. The garden center draws the warmest words. Customers in 2022 described plants arriving in great condition with staff explaining how to care for them, prices they called reasonable, and a shop worth browsing. On the contracting side, the accounts split. A July 2023 customer who had phoned several landscapers — some of whom took deposits and then never showed — said Elf's called back and actually turned up. An August 2024 customer praised the work, the communication and the crew. Unreturned calls run through the complaints, across nine years. A February 2023 customer said they called four times over two months about two projects, left voicemails, spoke to a representative, and heard nothing back. A July 2026 customer who had an irrigation system installed, loam brought in and a lawn hose-seeded in late fall 2025 said two emails and several phone calls asking them to hold the hydroseed until spring, the growing season being over, went unanswered. A 2017 Houzz reviewer said the loam and hydro-seeding over a new septic area came out well and the grass returned, but that follow-up after a sinkhole opened in that area went unanswered. One more, from March 2026: a plowing customer said the morning's plow buried the car he had shovelled out before work. Google shows 4.0 stars across 56 ratings. For plants, garden-center advice and routine landscape maintenance around Rochester, this is a long-established local choice with a real nursery behind it. If you are hiring them for an installation — irrigation, loam and seed, a hardscape — agree the schedule and a named contact in writing before work starts, and put any change of timing in an email you can point back to.
“4. Elf's Landscaping Inc. Rochester, N.H.”
In the late fall of 2025 they installed an irrigation system, brought in loam and hose-seeded my lawn. I sent them two emails and placed phone calls to them (unreturned) asking them to wait in the hydro seed until spring because the “growing season” was done AND it was starting to get very cold over night. They hydro seeded anyway and eventually said they would come back n the spring to fill in any areas that didn’t take. They came back and hydro seeded on a day that torrential rains were predicted. They had delayed this from the previous day because the forecast predicted rain. The evening of the day they seeded, as predicted, we got torrential rain and the hydro seed washed away for the most part. More unreturned phone calls and eventually agreed to cut-seed the new lawn. I followed their instructions on keeping the new lawn watered. This new lawn I have now is a field of clover and weeds. There is very little grass that has grown. I sent an email expressing how disappointed I was with them and the service they provided. No response I spent over $11,000 for the irrigation system and “new lawn”. I always try to give local businesses my business. I will not give them anymore of my business
Great plowing job this morning. Buried my wife’s car that I had shoveled around this morning before work. Absolutely unacceptable.
Great work. Great communication. Friendly team. Highly recommend.
Amazed at the service! Clearly this service is in demand, as I called several places. Patience. They all take time to call back. Some places made commitments, took deposits, said they'd show up only to no show. Elf's not only called back they actually showed up. The laborer said he could fix the current irrigation system. Said it would take two days. Said he'd squeeze in the work with other current installs. Took exactly two days. Showed up when he said he'd show up. Only pay when satisfied with service. Went ABOVE and BEYOND my expectations. Service has been complete for a few days everything works perfect.
Saw some workers while I was at the doctor's office. I don't like seeing a guy's underwear. Pull up your pants and look professional
