Fresh Start Remodeling and Repair is a remodeling and repair contractor with a 4.6-star average on both HomeAdvisor and Angi from 11 ratings each. A recent customer said James was on top of the details, and that he listened to what they were envisioning and made it happen. A recent HomeAdvisor customer said James and Dusty showed up when they said they would and were fast and moving all the time. In a 2025 HomeAdvisor review, a customer said the company replaced the floor in their living room, kitchen, dining room and laundry room, helped them choose the kind and color of flooring, cleaned while they worked and came in under estimate. That customer said some things came up that changed the timeline, and that he let them know ahead of time. A 2026 customer said the work came within quote and that a few other things they hadn't mentioned were repaired too. A 2024 customer said the price was the price as quoted. A recent one-star HomeAdvisor review describes a $108k build planned for 5-6 weeks that was not done 10 months later. That customer said James changed plans, substituted materials and ignored manufacturer's instructions, that the installation voided the ZIP system's 30-year and steel siding's 40-year warranties, and that framing defects left the ceiling height and building plumb unable to be fully corrected. The customer expected to pay ~50k over to have others fix the mistakes. Vermont lists its home improvement contractor registration, 174.0000609, as active, held by Fresh Start Remodeling and Repair LLC.
James is a great salesman. He will make you feel heard, respond quickly, and convince you that he will build your project quickly and within a reasonable budget. Savor this moment, because the moment you pay your deposit he will never look you in the eyes again. He will change plans, substitute materials, ignore manufacturer's instructions, constantly beg for money, and cut every corner possible. When confronted, he will deny, deflect, and belittle you. The only thing he won't do is quality work. His poor installation voided both the ZIP system's 30-year and steel siding's 40-year warranties, the structural issues remain unresolved, and because his framing defects were caught too late, my ceiling height and building plumb can never be fully corrected. Do a good background check, ask for 5+ references, and have an attorney review your contract. My 5-6 weeks $108k build is not done 10 months later, and I'll end up ~50k over paying actual pros to fix his mistakes.
