Twelve homeowners have written up GardenWorks Boston on Houzz, and every account names the same person: Brem Hyde, the president of what the BBB lists as a one-employee company at 119 Birch Street in Boston. The jobs they describe are city-lot work — back gardens, rooftop planters, patios cut into small urban yards, trellises and fences that have to fit a tight footprint. The Houzz page averages 5.0 across 24 ratings. What the written accounts actually show is a designer who stays in the project after the drawing is done. A 2024 review described him redesigning planting beds, replacing a lawn, building a trellis, overseeing an irrigation system and a new fence, then bringing in an arborist for the trees — and checking back later to see that everything took. In another 2022 account, a potholed, unused driveway was turned into a patio, with design, excavation, fence construction, materials and planting all handled by the same crew. A 2022 customer wrote about custom-built containers for a fully exposed, windy roof deck and follow-up advice on watering it through the winter. Collaboration is the other repeated note. A 2024 homeowner who had struggled with "contractors who aren't gardeners" said the arbor design went back and forth until it worked; a 2023 client described a written seasonal plan with pricing, revised in person whenever something changed. Two things are worth knowing before you call. The written history is dated and narrow: all twelve accounts sit on Houzz, they run 2021 to 2024, and the BBB profile — an A+ grade, opened in 2020 — carries no customer reviews of its own. And the Massachusetts Certified Landscape Professional credential, MCLP #032105, is listed on the company's own Houzz profile rather than confirmed against a registry. Landscaping-only work is exempt from Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, so there is nothing unusual about the absence of one. This is the right call for a Boston-area homeowner who wants a small garden or yard designed and then built — planting, hardscape, water features and the fencing around them — by the person who drew it. Ask for recent references, since the newest written account is from August 2024, and ask him to confirm the MCLP credential directly.
Brem landscaped my backyard. It is now a joy to be out there! He redesigned and installed planting beds, replaced the lawn, built a trellis, and oversaw the installation of an irrigation system and a new fence. He brought in an arborist to trim and fertilize the trees. He does great work himself and hires outstanding sub-contractors. He provided lots of follow-up, readily answered questions, and checked back to make sure everything grew in well. He’s down to earth, practical, and easy to work with. He was just right!
Brem was great to work with. Good communication back and forth as we worked together on the design and build of an arbor in my garden. I've had problems with contractors who aren't gardeners, and contractors who can't seem to collaborate with a homeowner, but there were none of those concerns and the outcome is a beautiful structure for climbing plants and a smooth working relationship. I will definitely be contacting GardenWorks Boston in the future.
Brem recently converted my backyard into a beautiful garden, complete with a great patio installation, and a water feature. From the initial consultation to the final touches, Brem displayed dedication and an attention to detail that exceeded my expectations. Right from the start, Brem took the time to listen to my ideas and preferences. He patiently discussed various design concepts and offered valuable insights to enhance the overall vision of the project. He skillfully combined a diverse selection of plants, flowers, and shrubs, resulting in a harmonious blend of colors and textures . The quality of materials used and the precision in the construction of the patio was impressive. Brem and his team demonstrated a high level of professionalism and integrity. They kept me informed of the progress, promptly addressed any concerns, and always arrived on schedule. In conclusion, I recommend Brem highly for any landscaping project for his exceptional design skills, professional approach, and genuine passion for creating beautiful outdoor spaces.
Brem does a great job with my city landscape. He is very creative, is reliable and always on time. If I have any questions about what he's done he comes over and reviews them with me in person until we get to an agreed-upon solution. He provides me a detailed plan for what he's going to do for the season and a budget with pricing. When things change he just the cost accordingly. It is a pleasure doing business with brem. I've been working with him for two seasons now and highly recommend his services. It is my intention to continue to work with him.
