Herringbone & Brass runs out of Brookline as a small design studio built around one thing: getting a client's own taste onto the walls, not a house style. Founder Sylvia Pagán Westphal started the studio after years in luxury real estate, where she found herself doing as much styling and staging as selling, and it now handles interior design, renovation management, and furniture procurement for clients across Greater Boston and into Miami. The reviews that have come in this year keep landing on the same point: clients who'd already been through other designers say this was the first one to actually execute their vision. One, writing in June, called working with designer Virginia the best decision after "wasting significant time and money" elsewhere, and noted her rate runs on the higher end but paid off in time saved. Another, a family that had just moved to Wellesley from New York City, credits the studio with the wallpaper, furniture, carpets, and curtains their own guests keep complimenting. A corporate client working with Lisa, Elizabeth, and Sylvia in January praised clear communication and timelines that were actually met. Google and Houzz both show a clean 5.0 — from 7 and 5 ratings respectively — and the pattern holds across five sources going back to 2024, though the total volume is still modest for a studio that's been reviewed for a couple of years. The one thing worth raising before signing on is cost: the higher-end rate one client called worth it is still worth pinning down, especially since the studio bills hourly for design work and marks up goods sourced through its trade partners. Nothing in the reviews so far points to missed deadlines or communication problems — if anything, the opposite. This reads like the right call for a full room or whole-home refresh where you want a designer managing vendors and installation end to end, not just handing over a mood board — with the rate structure discussed upfront.

Herringbone and Brass is truly top notch. After going through several interior designers (and wasting significant time and money trying to get others to understand and execute my style), working with Virginia at H&B has been the best decision. Virginia is extremely efficient, reasonable, capable and understanding. While her rate may be at the higher end, it more than evens out with the time (and frustration) saved. She gets it right, and she gets it right quickly. She's also a really nice person and very easy to work with! Herringbone and Brass sends detailed invoices that allow you to easily know how their time and your money is being spent. They are able to do "value engineering" to stay within budget while not compromising on a final polished and complete look. When we decided to build a second home, there was no question we wanted Virginia involved. Because we know that Virginia has a remarkable ability to internalize a client's taste and preferences, we felt confident that we could trust her empirically. She is flexible about how involved the client wants to be. Being busy people, we decided to hand off most of the decision making to her; asking her to bring us just 2–3 curated options for any decision (faucets, tile, furniture, you name it) and trusting completely that every option will be worth considering. That kind of confidence is invaluable and has made what could have been an incredibly time consuming and stressful process much more enjoyable. As a bonus: while exterior work isn't typically her focus, we recently brought Virginia in to consult with our landscape designer on an outdoor project. Her ability to think about space, flow, and how a home works for your actual lifestyle was just as sharp outside as inside! I can't recommend H&B more highly.

Herringbone and Brass did an amazing job with our home. They truly transformed this blank slate into a warm beautiful space for our family that had newly moved to Wellesley from New York City. Guests who have visited our home have complimented the gorgeous wallpaper choices, the beautiful furniture, carpets, curtains, and kids' bedrooms and colorful "lounge" spaces their friends love when they come over. Not only is their work fantastic but they are a joy to work with--kind, respectful of our choices and preferences, efficient, and a wonderful and collaborative team. Highly recommend them!

Herringbone & Brass provided interior design services for our company, and the experience was nothing short of exceptional. Lisa, Elizabeth (Liz), and Sylvia were an absolute pleasure to work with from start to finish. Their attention to detail, creativity, and professionalism truly distinguish them. They took the time to understand our vision and delivered a finished space that exceeded our expectations in both form and function. Communication was clear, timelines were met, and every interaction reflected a genuine commitment to excellence and customer service. Quite simply, this is the best interior design firm money can buy. We would not hesitate to work with Herringbone & Brass again and highly recommend them to any organization seeking top-tier design and service!

We moved to Newton Corner when I was 32 weeks pregnant! Sylvia and Lisa helped us to make our dream home a reality in record time before the baby came! They listened to our priorities and executed on painting the entire home and having window treatments installed prior to us even moving in. H&B is well connected to great vendors and their communication is efficient and thorough. Lisa met with us weekly and provided us with a great and easy to access powerpoint and she was super organized. We are repeat clients and are currently working with Lisa to design our outdoor space!
