A 5.0 average across 20 Google ratings, and the same first name runs through nearly all of them: Virginia. Ironwood Studio Co. works out of Fairhaven on the Massachusetts South Coast and calls itself a design-build firm — interior design, renovations and additions, and custom home construction, with general contracting and project management in house. The company says Virginia DesRoches founded it after close to two decades in New England residential and commercial construction, and that she runs it with John Foran, whom it describes as its CEO, a licensed general contractor and construction manager. Its own stated service area names Plymouth and Tiverton. The through-line in what clients write is the part of a renovation that usually stalls: deciding things, then getting them ordered and installed. A homeowner writing in July 2026 had tried several times to plan a small master bathroom alone; by the second meeting with Ironwood there were layout plans, tile samples, vanity options, lighting and fixtures on the table. A March 2026 client listed the scope the firm carried on a whole house — ceiling beams, shiplap, a fireplace mantle, whole-home paint, tile, countertops, a mudroom bench, shower glass and window treatments. Another in July 2026 credited the basement floorplan with taking input from every member of the family. The history runs deep enough to read. Reviews stretch from 2021 to 2026 across six sources, all of them five stars, and three landed in the last six months. In a 2025 review a client listed painting, mini-splits, furniture, floors and odds and ends handled together, with word on what to expect at each step. A 2024 reviewer had reclaimed wood sourced at Ironwood's own shop and installed by its team; a 2023 client hired them for a banquet-facility renovation, and a 2024 school in Acushnet got an estimate and a timeline against a strict deadline. Their name turns up in print, too: the Providence Journal and Columbia Tribune reported in December 2021 that DesRoches would work on the Freestones City Grill renovation, and a 2024 design site featured a Westport beach house the studio reimagined. One thing to sort out before signing. Ironwood is sometimes the design team riding alongside someone else's builder — a 2023 client's general contractor was Green Logic Builders, and a 2022 Boston client said Virginia sourced the GC and kept the job on time and on budget — and sometimes it carries the build itself. Which of those you are buying changes the contract, so ask. Their Angi and HomeAdvisor pages won't settle it: both carry the same three April 2021 reviews, filed under interior decorator, with a self-reported five years in business. For a substantial renovation or a new build where design decisions and construction keep colliding, this is the kind of team that holds both. Pin down the scope of their role, and check the Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration yourself before work starts.
