Six of Ironwood Studio Co.'s reviewers already had a builder, an architect or a general contractor on the job, and brought Ironwood in anyway — for the design decisions that sit between a floor plan and a finished room. The Fairhaven firm describes itself as a design-build outfit on the Massachusetts South Coast, doing interior design, renovations and additions, and custom home construction with its own general contracting and project management in house. It says it was founded by principal interior designer Virginia DesRoches, who spent close to two decades in New England residential and commercial construction first; John Foran, its CEO, is described by the company as a licensed general contractor and construction manager.
The selection load is the recurring job. A homeowner writing in August 2024 bought a two-hour consultation with Virginia and Allison at their builder's showroom just to get through the choices on a new build, and had their kitchen cabinetry plans looked over while they were there. Parents of eight, writing in November 2023, wanted an expert to come in and make all the necessary selections. A June 2023 client had Ironwood work alongside their general contractor, Green Logic Builders, on design decisions that had to meet a timeline and a budget.
Scopes run from an hour of advice to a contract touching most of a house. In March 2026, one client listed custom design, material selection, vendor coordination and installation across ceiling beams, shiplap, a fireplace mantle, whole-home paint, tile, countertops, a mudroom bench, shower glass and window treatments. In October 2025, another had painting, mini-splits, new floors and new furniture coordinated, and was told what to expect at each step. Two July 2026 reviewers came with a planning problem instead — a small master bathroom one of them had tried several times to lay out, and a floor plan for a basement renovation.
The work is not only residential. A September 2024 reviewer had a classroom renovated at St. Francis Xavier School in Acushnet on a strict timeline, and a June 2023 reviewer had a banquet facility renovated within budget. A July 2024 onekindesign.com feature covered a Westport beach house the firm reimagined, and a December 2021 Providence Journal piece credited Virginia DesRoches with designing the Black Whale and Carmine's.
Scope is the thing to settle first, because theirs moves: a design consultation, design plus coordination of trades you have already hired, or construction under Ironwood's own general contracting. Ask which of those you are buying, who holds the schedule, and which parts of the work Ironwood's own crew performs.
A good call if you are mid-project with a builder and buried in selections, or if you want one firm from floor plan through installation. Get the scope and the hand-offs in writing before the first selection meeting.
