Two names come up again and again in J&I's reviews: JJ, who runs the projects, and Irma. A 2016 customer described it plainly as a mother-and-daughter workroom — a shop that sews drapery and re-covers furniture rather than swinging a hammer. What they make is measured to the room. Drapery and window shades, bedding, cushions and pillows, and upholstery that runs from dining chairs to whole bed frames. In July 2016 a customer described an antique French bed taken apart at her house, upholstered with piping she rated against far pricier work, then reassembled in place, with bedding, pillows and window treatments coordinated to match. Another writing that same month listed red drapes, a navy velvet bed and headboard, a re-upholstered rocking chair and yellow drapery for a Beacon Hill living room — and singled out curtains hemmed to allow for uneven floorboards. Small jobs get the same treatment. In a June 2019 review, a customer who called only to have three curtain rods replaced said the installer, Javier, spackled the holes the old rods left and fitted heavy-duty bracket screws in case she ever hung a heavier drape. In 2015 another described six drapery panels joined into two, the complex pattern matched across seams she called virtually invisible. The catch is timing. Houzz shows 4.8 across 17 ratings and Google 5.0 across two, but the written accounts run from June 2014 to January 2020 — an unbroken run of five stars that belongs to an earlier stretch of the business. Houzz lists the shop's phone as (617) 785-6456 and its site as gotcustomdrapes.com, with a service area covering Lynn, Nahant, Swampscott, Marblehead and most of the North Shore. If you want made-to-measure drapery, shades or reupholstery rather than window replacement, this is that kind of shop. Call first and ask who is running the workroom now, then ask to see recent pieces.
We cannot say enough about how great our experience was with JJ and her team. JJ was honest, reliable, flexible and had an amazing eye for design. We trusted her from the beginning and are so thrilled with the curtains that she made for our bay window!
The curtains and drapes in my house were made by JJ and her team. The house looks like something straight out of a magazine. I was highly impressed by JJ's attention to details and her professionalism. Needless to say she by far superseded expectations. I will highly recommend her to my friends and colleagues. J J you are a rare gem!
I called J&I for a very small project - replacing 3 curtain rods - and was very pleased with the service. JJ answered the phone right away when I called - that's the sign of a professional that values their clients. It was easy to set up an appointment. Javier the installer was on time, very pleasant, knowledgeable, and had meticulous attention to detail. He spackled holes left behind by the old rods and used heavy-duty bracket screws in case I wanted to put up a heavier drape in future. I would definitely call them again for another drapery project.
I am extremely satisfied with the high-quality custom products I have received from J&I Custom Drapes, which includes gorgeous red drapes and a hand-made upholstered bed and headboard in midnight navy velvet for the master bedroom; a re-upholstered rocking chair that my mother-in-law used when my husband was young ; and custom yellow drapery for our Beacon Hill living room. JJ's warm, upbeat personality and her extensive knowledge of drapery and rods make it a pleasure to work with her and her team directly, and she has also coordinated seamlessly with our designer. Turnaround time has been amazing: she's helped us meet some very tight timelines, while always maintaining her precision and attention to detail--whether in hanging the rods, hemming the curtains to account for uneven floorboards, or the craftsmanship of the upholstery. Not only have I received great service and products, but I love that this local business is run by a mother-daughter team.
J&I upholstered my antique french bed. I was nervous about letting just anyone do the job but JJ, the project coordinator, came to my home and intuitively understood my vision for the piece. She gave me expert advice about fabric choices, had the bed dissembled and then reassembled in my home when the job was complete, and she coordinated bedding, pillows, and window treatments that have transformed my bedroom. The upholstery has top quality piping and a finished look that rivals the most expensive upholstery available, but at a very reasonable price. I was so happy with JJ's taste and the quality of her work that I had JJ make custom drapes for my living room. Both projects exceeded my expectations, were performed within budget and on time, and have the classic elegance I had hoped for. Bravo! Colleen in Nahant
