Homeowners who write about Kraus Associates keep circling the same unusual fact: the person who drew the plans is also the person running the job site. Charles Kraus is an architect and a builder, and reviewers describe hiring him for both halves of the same project — design through construction. The Wellesley firm describes itself as an architect-led design/build shop working on residential and commercial projects, handling everything from zoning feasibility and construction documents through construction management, or acting as the owner's agent when someone else builds. Its Houzz profile, at 66 Central Street, calls the business locally owned. The work people describe is big. A Newton homeowner writing in June 2026 listed a finished basement, walls taken down, a new mudroom, a redone kitchen and every bathroom, plus an added en suite — and singled out Charles for steering them off ideas that would have cost a lot without adding value. In January 2026, the owner of an early-20th-century house described center beam stabilization, a remodeled kitchen, a new deck and two bathrooms, all designed and supervised personally. A September 2025 reviewer had three bathrooms renovated and reported the job on time, detailed, and under budget. That same month, another described a Greek Revival farmhouse designed with what they called remarkable attention to historical detail, and a third had a large porch converted into a four-season room. The numbers behind those accounts: 4.8 across 16 Google ratings and 5.0 across 19 on Houzz, with written accounts running from 2020 to 2026 and three in the last six months. Houzz lists affiliations with the AIA, the Boston Society of Architects and NCARB, plus six Best of Houzz awards. The company's Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active, recorded under Kraus Associates LLC; Houzz separately lists a license number 10560, which the directory publishes without confirmation. One 2-star Google rating sits in the record, posted in August 2026, but its text describes a glass-walled workspace rather than any project with this firm. Beyond that, the thing worth weighing isn't a complaint — it's fit. Nearly every account here is a second-floor addition, a whole-house renovation, a new home, or a multi-room gut. This is not the outfit you call for a single small repair. If you're planning a design-and-build renovation, especially on an older house where the detailing matters, this is a firm worth a call. Before booking, settle which role they'll play — designer and builder, or designer with your own contractor — since they offer both, and the fee structure differs accordingly.
Our company recently collaborated with Charles and his team on a project in Wellesley, and we have found them to very professional, organized, and very good at communicating with my team and the homeowners. At the end of each day, their team has left the project area clean and safe. We look forward to the opportunity of working with Kraus Associates again!
Hello, dear friends, this space is perfect for working; four zones, one rule: either you work or you disappear. The walls are glass... there is no shelter for distractions. The light cuts through the space like a razor; the shadows blur the boundaries.
No one has asked me to write this review. We are almost finished renovating our home in Newton MA—we finished the basement, knocked down some walls, added a mudroom, redid the kitchen and all the bathrooms, added an en suite bathroom upstairs, etc. Charles and his team were absolutely fantastic to work with. We could not be happier with the end results. We were able to get every item on our wishlist. I also really appreciated that Charles was knowledgeable about costs in the area and steered us away from some bad ideas we had that would have cost way too much and not significantly improved the value of our home. He was also great at communicating with our contractor. I highly recommend Kraus Associates for their architectural services and have already recommended this firm to others. Truly five stars!!
Kraus Associates were excellent in every phase of the extensive work they performed on our early 20th century house. Charles personally designed and supervised each phase of the project: center beam stabilization, remodeled kitchen, new deck, renovated bathroom, and new bathroom. He regularly made suggestions that improved the project and reduced costs. Charles also has a fine crew of artisans and collaborators with whom he has worked for years. They were careful, courteous, and highly efficient. The completed work is of excellent quality, and projects are finished on time - in one case they came in ahead of schedule and under budget! Given the high quality of Kraus Associates' services, they provide exceptional value. We feel very lucky to have found them and give them our highest recommendation.
Just completed a large renovation with Charles Kraus and Kraus Associates. We added a second floor master, fully remodeled the second floor, and finished our basement. Charles was great to work with. Always offering suggestions and quick to address any changes we asked for and work through any unexpected roadblocks. Our final project came out great, on time, and on budget. We couldn’t be happier and highly recommend Kraus Associates.
