Larkspur Design describes itself on Houzz as an ecological landscape design company serving Southern Maine, women-owned and operated, designing gardens and landscapes for residential and commercial properties. A 2025 customer said Seana and Eva drew up a full plan for gardens, trees, stone walkways, a wall and patios at a new farm house build in Harpswell, and connected them with stone work and landscaping companies that they coordinated throughout the project. A 2025 customer described a sensory garden designed for their disabled child and family, and said the team tracked sun hours to place each plant. A 2020 customer said Seana and her team drew up a plan for their whole Deering Center property, with Seana and her crew doing some of the work and the owners doing the rest. A 2019 customer said Seana adjusted a design by First Light Wildlife Habitat for an all-native, no-lawn landscape on a 0.8 acre lot in Brunswick, then she and her crew did the installation without power equipment. A 2020 customer said they hired Larkspur for a design plan only and were using it to plant a new woodland garden themselves. A 2025 customer gave one star. They said a design for a DIY install project did not meet their project goals, and that the initial plan included a windbreak they had not expressed interest in. That 2025 customer also said a request for a partial refund was refused after they waited a month, and that Seana said in the refusal that the company does not do detailed meadow planting plans.
We engaged Larkspur for a full plan to complement our new farm house build in Harpswell. It was a blank slate in need of a plan for gardens, trees, stone walkways, a wall and patios. The plan Seana and Eva came up with was perfect. They solicited and incorporated our input around the design and plantings, were creative when we needed to break the project into phases, and connected us with stone work and landscaping companies who they coordinated throughout the project. They also made sure we were set up to ensure everything was well watered...consulting with us throughout and beyond the plantings. Seana and Eva are a real pleasure to work with. We highly recommend Larkspur!
Natural New England designs with thoughtful native selections of plants that benefit your property's diversity of birds and insects. The Larkspur team was responsive, dedicated and professional. Highly recommend!
We had a terrible experience working with Seana and Julie. Seana said our experience was in the minority - the only time this has happened in 20 years in business - but it doesn't change that I felt gaslit, stressed, and distressed over the course of this vendor experience. We are now out thousands of dollars with a design that didn't meet our project goals and expectations. I requested a partial refund after considering everything we went through and the disconnect between what we had expected and what they delivered. They made us wait a month and then said no. Their reasons didn't stand up to everything we had already shared with them e.g. this was a DIY install project with a known budget (which their team forgot about discussing). Seana backtracked and said in her refusal that they don't do detailed Meadow planting plans, they figure these things out onsite - then why did their team propose two giant meadows as the main perennial areas for our project and not mention this? We said in the intake and throughout the process that we'd be installing all the plants ourselves and needed the designs to support this. Before starting the initial plan and plant lists they didn't check on/confirm our project preferences for materials, plants, style and color/combo preferences, etc. We both work from home and they never checked views from the windows/lines of sight inside the house before doing the initial plan (and we invited them in when they were surveying). Their initial plan also included a giant windbreak which wasn't anything we had expressed interest in, let alone being on our priorities, and was outside the area we designated to work in. It also went against our stated goal of maintaining the expansive views we have - there was only one location we were potentially ok with a taller tree. They also planned a deck and boardwalk (we didn't want a deck and again this was a DIY project and we preferred peastone, if anything) but then removing)/converting it was problematic because it was in a seasonally very wet area. Some plant choices also didn't seem to take into account site conditions. They blamed us for time needed to fix their errors/things they missed, and things they did without checking on, as well as the time to complete a planting plan for the giant meadows. Some plants changed from one round to the next without notice, etc. I have no confidence that the design of the plants is as we expected. Numerous plants in the foundation beds were not ones we liked/preferred but we had already run out of scope due to everything mentioned so we absorbed making those changes ourselves later, which left us with an unsatisfactory design in that area we're now endeavoring to try to re-imagine ourselves and have no trust in the meadow designs. I'll never forget how they ruined what was supposed to be a fun/joyful design experience, turned it into months of stress and distress (it's now been about a year from when we initiated working with them).
We had the absolute pleasure of working with Larkspur Design to create a sensory garden for our disabled child and family, and the experience was nothing short of extraordinary. From the very beginning, their team showed deep empathy and a genuine desire to understand our family’s unique needs. They took the time to listen, plan thoughtfully, and revise designs iteratively until everything felt just right. Their attention to detail was remarkable—they even tracked sun hours to ensure every plant was placed in the optimal spot. The garden now includes a beautiful mix of textures, scents, sounds, and medicinal plants that support both mental and physical health. It’s become a cherished outdoor living space that our whole family enjoys regularly. The transformation has been life-changing. What was once an underused area is now a vibrant, healing sanctuary. We can’t thank the team enough for their expertise, kindness, and dedication. Highly recommend Larkspur Design to anyone looking to create a meaningful and inclusive garden space.
Partnering with Larkspur Design was a "dream come true"...honestly! Since we moved into our house over 23 years ago, I always wanted to install a perennial garden on the side of our house (my "dream" garden). I did a lot of research on small, local businesses and came across Larkspur Design. Their design philosophy of integrating sustainability, biodiversity and beauty, while tailoring gardens to meet customer's "wishes" was a great match for me. We partnered together on the design & selection of plants (I learned a lot about plants that our ecologically friendly!) and I couldn't be more thrilled with how the garden turned out. It's a beautiful extension of our sanctuary. Seana was an absolute delight to partner with - kind, professional, knowledgeable, responsive and caring. The team that helped with the actual installation were amazing! I highly recommend Larkspur Design and I look forward to partnering with them again on future landscaping projects! Thank you, Larkspur Design, for an exceptional experience. Best, Kelly Williams
