Matt Clark's Northern Basement Systems does basement waterproofing, crawl space moisture control and foundation repair, and a samessenger.com article describes those services in Vermont, New Hampshire and New York. The company says it has been in business 23 years, and its stated service area takes in Burlington, Montpelier, Middlebury, Charlotte, Essex and Grand Isle. On Google it holds 4.8 stars from 206 ratings. One customer started with a sump pump, then had an exterior drainage system installed, then a line in the floor after water seeped through it, and said the staff laid down protective floor material and put the house back together by the end of the day. A customer wrote that Luis and his crew installed perimeter drains, waterproofed the crawl space, and put in a dual sump pump system and the CleanSpace Wall System. A customer with an 1826 stacked stone foundation said the team did wall stabilization on it. One homeowner said Hunter called each morning to give an ETA and walked them through the plan and each step. A customer said a team of four did the entire basement in about 6 hours. A customer whose perimeter system NBS installed 11 years ago said the company services it annually and that it let them finish part of the basement. A 2025 customer said Ben Sutton and his team cleaned out a crawl space, encapsulated it, reinforced the house floor with smart jacks, and added a couple of smart drains and a dehumidifier. A 2013 Angi reviewer said the wall was removed and water piping installed, and that the basement was dry after Cabot got 5.5 inches of rain. A customer who paid $24,000 for basement sealing said the estimate left out replacing a window with vinyl and specifying a dehumidifier properly sized for the space, and that moisture and mildew then began wrapping around the window. That customer said Matt acknowledged the window issue and sent a quote for the additional work, then calls and emails went unanswered, and they hired another contractor to install the window and dehumidifier. A 2022 Reddit commenter on r/burlington said the company tried to scare them into a $15,000 dehumidification system. A 2023 customer said the basement was dry but felt pressured into a more expensive solution than needed. That 2023 customer also found seams and corners of the system secured with duct tape, and said the company returned to correct an area where its cement was cracking. A 2023 reviewer said a salesman pressed them to sign right away for a 5% discount. A 2024 customer who had waterproofing materials, two sump pumps and a dehumidifier installed said the foreman, Corey, kept them informed as the work went on. That 2024 customer also asked the company to drop the small discount for signing immediately with a down payment. Vermont lists its residential contractor registration, 174.0000524, as active, held by Northern Basement Systems. A February 2024 r/vermont commenter said Northern Basement quoted nearly three times the cost of its competition.
βMatt Clarkβs Northern Basement Systems has been great for us in Barre and anyone weβve ever talked to who hired them.β
βI ended up paying northern basement system way too much to get the drainage I needed to allow me to finish my basement.β
βWe had Northern Basement come out and they quoted nearly 3 times the cost of their competition. Pushy sales offering a discount if you sign a contract that day instead of getting additional quotes (always a huge red flag). The whole operation was pretty pushy/sleazy.β
βI recently had Paul from Northern Basements come check out my foundation and crawl space. Super honest and nice guy with a lot of experience.β

Delivered as promised! This company is who want to fix any basement/foundation issues with your home.
am extremely disappointed with Northern Basements and Matt. They quoted a significant sumβ$24,000βand assured me their basement sealing technique would fully resolve my moisture issues. Unfortunately, the initial estimate completely overlooked two major items: replacing an existing window with vinyl to ensure an unbroken perimeter seal, and specifying a dehumidifier properly sized for the space. Relying on their professional expertise, I proceeded with the work. Soon after, severe moisture and mildew began wrapping around the window due to the compromised seal. Mattβs primary focus appeared to be collecting the final payment. I paid him in full so he would come assess the failure. While on site, he acknowledged that the window was indeed an issue and agreed that an upgraded dehumidifier was necessary, later sending over a quote for the additional work. When I followed up to address the situation, communication completely stopped. Despite repeated phone calls and emailsβand assurances from office staff that management would be in touchβI have received no response. After spending $24,000, I was left with persistent humidity, mold growth, and a broken seal. I ultimately had to hire another contractor to install the proper window and dehumidifier. Had Northern Basements done their job properly from the start, these essentials would have been included in the original scope. The poor execution, lack of accountability, and refusal to return calls have been thoroughly unprofessional.
Hunter and his crew were consummate professionals. They got the job done quickly and to exacting standards. They were extremely respectful of my property and accommodating to my schedule to get the job done. They went above and beyond to make sure that my foundation is solid for years to come!
Great company! Consult for our home was scheduled easily and the gentleman who came out was very knowledgeable and explained things well. Our job was scheduled, now has been completed. The team that came out for our foundation supports was quick and professional. They got the job quickly and cleaned up everything like they were never there. A walk through of the completed job was also performed and a brief explanation of the work that was done. Overall, super happy we went with Northern Basement. They are also budget friendly and offer financing options, which in this economy right now, was a big help.
I have been extremely satisfied with Northern Basement Systems' installation and service support for the last two years. Today I want to especially thank the professionalism of Blain Culver and Dylan Mason. They identified an issue during my service call and resolved it in minutes. They were also very friendly (despite their very long day) and went out of their way to answer all my questions, and then further tested all Triple Safe pumps and sensors to instill the confidence that the systems work perfectly. I am giving my highest recommendation to anyone considering Northern Basement's services due to their incredible service with technicians like Blaine Culver and Dylan Mason. Well done. Thank you.
