A town Sealer with a measuring stick is not how most landscaping disputes end. In a November 2017 Google review, a customer who ordered 384 cubic feet of seasoned firewood wrote that the Weights and Measures Division from the Town of Saugus measured the delivery at 272 cubic feet — nearly a full cord short — and told readers to avoid the company. North Shore Landscape & Sealcoating works out of 298 Jefferson Ave in Salem. Phil Lohnes owns it, BBB lists two employees, and the profile puts the business start at January 2005. The work spans both halves of the year: lawn maintenance, fertilization, pruning, edging and mulching, seasonal and storm clean-ups on one side; driveway sealcoating, snow plowing and attic and basement clean-outs on the other. The written history runs to 2017 and splits sharply. Alongside the firewood complaint, an April 2017 reviewer wrote that workers damaged and left debris on a neighbour's vehicle. A September 2017 reviewer took the other side, calling it "a great service at a reasonable price" and noting that Lohnes himself is available if questions come up. Its BBB page carries an A+ rating, and that is worth reading precisely: the same page states the business is not BBB accredited, and publishes no customer reviews and no complaint count. On Google the picture is muddier still — a 2.3-star average printed with no ratings behind it. For a homeowner in Salem or nearby weighing a maintenance contract or a driveway sealcoat, two things are worth settling before any truck arrives. If material is sold by volume — firewood, mulch, loam — put the quantity and how it gets measured in writing. And agree up front what happens to debris around neighbouring cars and property. The written history stops in 2017, so ask for references from recent seasons rather than reading either the complaints or the praise as current.
I ordered 384 cubic feet of seasoned firewood. 128 cubic feet stacked per regulatory guidelines equals one cord. The owner, Philip Lohnes, is extremely unprofessional. The Sealer from the Weights and Measures Division from the Town of Saugus came and measured the firewood and found it measured 272 cubic feet. I have been shorted almost one full cord. Do not buy firewood or do any other business with this company. AVOID!!!!!
This company provides a great service at a reasonable price. Phil Lohnes is the owner and you can work with him if any concerns or questions arise.
Horrible company. Damaged and left debris all over the vehicle of customers neighbor. Very disrespectful workers. STAY AWAY!!
