A recent Google customer hired Peter B Rice & Co for a large renovation that took in the kitchen, mudroom, powder room, laundry room, primary bedroom and bathroom, plus a new hallway and a large walk-in primary closet. That customer said Stuart Rice provided hands-on leadership the entire time, took their vision and created plans, and that the project was completed at the expected time. After living in the space for a while, they wrote, "they were available to address the minor concerns we had." The customer plans to renovate more of the house next year with the company. On its Houzz profile the company describes itself as a Maine building and design firm, and its website says it has been in business 42 years. Its work has also been written up on finehomebuilding.com. A 2018 Houzz customer said Peter Rice & Co. remodeled their kitchen and built a deck. That 2018 customer said Stuart helped design the kitchen layout and was quick to respond by email, phone or text, and wrote that "They stayed mostly on the timeline" and on budget, with a few additional touch ups. A 2017 customer described a get-away cottage built by Peter and his crew, and said Peter worked with town officials, their architect and engineer on the plans. That 2017 customer also said Peter e-mailed and sent photos regularly while they were not local, and named custom cabinetry, a banquette bench with drawers and a custom automatic lift loft stairway among the details. A 2015 customer wrote that they had worked with Peter B. Rice and Co. on three major house projects. In that 2015 review, the customer said Peter was clear on how much time and money a change would add before they proceeded, and that the team cleaned up the site daily. A 2014 customer said Peter and his crews built a small addition with a full bathroom, mudroom, new back entrance and a multi-level deck with hot tub. In 2013, Bruce B. Butler, AIA, wrote on Houzz of working with Peter for over 10 years on projects from small homes and additions on restrictive sites to larger oceanfront properties. Cost is part of the picture. The 2014 customer wrote that high quality materials and meeting code made the cost significant, and a 2013 customer who had a complete kitchen renovation, a new deck and a large room finished over a double garage called the company "Not the least expensive builder" while praising the transparent billing.
“Peter B. Rice & Co. build efficiencies into a new 1000-sq.-ft. ocean-front house.”
“Ocean-front builds nearly always involve considerable restrictions, and this project in Freeport, Maine, was no exception. Builder Stuart Rice of Peter B. Rice & Co. worked with Thomas White from ACTWO Architects to shimmy the right struct”
We are thrilled with the outcome of our renovation. We worked with Rice and Company for a large renovation of our home including: the kitchen, mudroom, powder room, laundry room, primary bedroom and bathroom as well as creation of a new hallway, large walk in primary closet. This was our first renovation experience, and Stuart Rice provided excellent hands-on leadership for the entire time. He took our vision and created plans and was available for frequent changes to the plans as we thought through the concept. During the renovation itself, the crew of expert craftsmen were hardworking, prompt, clean, pleasant to be around and very contentious. We note that the project was completed at the expected time. Finally, after the renovation was completed, they were available to address the minor concerns we had after living in the space for a while. We plan to renovate more of our house next year and will be using Rice and Company.
Peter Rice & Co. remodeled our kitchen and built a deck for us. Stuart (Peter's son) was so easy to work with and straight to the point. He was communicative, organized, and on top of the different subcontractors to get things almost done by the time we had to move into the house. When I had a question, Stuart was quick to respond by email, phone, or text. I so appreciated his professionalism and now love the quality of work they did! Stuart helped us design the layout of the kitchen, look into product options, and think about how we would use the space. They stayed mostly on the timeline (finished most work by the agreed end date and had a few additional touch ups) and on budget. I would definitely use them again.
Peter and his crew were a joy to work with; we couldn't recommend them more highly! We set out to build a dream get-away cottage for our family. We were somewhat constrained by building codes on the size and location of the building. Peter worked seamlessly with town officials, our architect and engineer to ensure that plans were put in place for the best possible outcome. Peter's communications throughout the project were amazing. He and his team are incredibly organized and planned ahead, getting our input on requests and choices, throughout the process. Although we were not local for most of the project, we always felt well-informed and up-to-date on project status. Peter e-mailed and sent us photos regularly. Finally, the craftsmanship and attention to detail by Peter and his crew were even beyond expectations. From beautiful custom cabinetry to a banquette bench with drawers to the stain color of our ceilings to a custom, automatic lift loft stairway - we couldn't be happier with the final product. Peter and crew's pride in work and craftsmanship is in a class by itself. Our family is in love with the cottage built by Peter and crew and we thank them for their amazing creativity, enthusiasm and dedication to making our dream house a reality.
We have worked with Peter B. Rice and Co. on three major house projects and we could not be happier with the outcome. For the third major renovation, we didn't even consider hiring anyone else. The planning, execution and quality of work is excellent. Peter and his craftsman are extremely professional, have years of experience as a team, and were a joy to have working at our home while we lived there during construction (we missed them when the project was complete). Peter is very responsive to the client's requests and he would provide us with different options and pricing when we made changes to the original plan. We remained on schedule and budget (except when we made changes - and in that case, Peter was clear on how much time and money it would add before we would proceed). During construction, the team was respectful of our privacy, always friendly, were as quiet as possible (no loud music), cleaned up the site daily, and nobody smoked on the job site. Attention to detail is very important to Peter and his team and every day they would consult with us on individual items that needed addressing. We wanted to be involved in these details, and if you have done major construction, you know that issues come up every day (even with the best architectural drawings by Bruce Butler of Freeport, ME). The final outcome is gorgeous and we would recommend Peter B. Rice and Co. to anyone looking to do minor or major house renovations or build a new home.
Peter and his crews built a small addition on our house in 2012/13 that includes a full bathroom, mudroom, new back entrance, and a multi-level deck with hot tub. Their attention to detail and professionalism was on display throughout the project, and every question we had was answered promptly to our satisfaction. We used high quality materials and made sure we met/exceeded all code requirements from the beginning, so the cost was significant. That said, we would not do anything differently in hindsight. When you contract with Peter, you can have confidence that your project will turn out right!
