Ray Plante & Sons describes itself as a family-owned septic and excavation business that has served Rhode Island since 1985. Its website names Providence, Cranston, Foster, Scituate and Johnston as its service area. A 2025 Google customer described replacing a failing septic system after another contractor quit partway through planning. That 2025 customer said Mike Harbour walked them through every detail and explained their options, and that his quote was higher than their original one but aligned with other estimates. When DEM's test hole indicated a pump would be needed, the 2025 reviewer said Mike confirmed it was required and billed it as a pass-through cost with no markup. That customer also said the pit in the yard was kept safe and secure for trick-or-treaters, and that the new system was in and fully functional. A 2025 customer said Mike came out to give an estimate and that they waited on a waiting list before the company installed a whole new septic system. That 2025 customer said they cleaned up the yard afterward and put back the things they had moved. A recent customer says they came out the same day and that the technician, Greg, made sure everything was working before he left, with fair pricing.
Easy and reasonable!
The service was excellent. They came out the same day and the technician, Greg, went above and beyond to make sure everything was working perfectly before he left. Very professional and friendly, with fair pricing. Highly recommend and will be back again.
The absolute best in Rhode Island — truly. Here’s why Ray Plante & Sons, and especially Mike Harbour, earned our business, our trust, and our loyalty. In 2024, after a flooding event, we learned that our septic system was failing. We got an initial quote from another contractor, but we weren’t financially ready to move forward yet. When we reached back out this year, ready to commit, we re-engaged that same contractor. After weeks of discussions, DEM approvals, and back-and-forth planning, the contractor abruptly quit following a tense conversation — leaving us scrambling for a replacement. We had already spoken with several companies back in 2024, and to be honest, we weren’t impressed. Many made us feel like we needed them far more than they needed us, with attitudes that didn’t inspire confidence or trust. It seemed to be a universal theme among Rhode Island septic contractors: take-it-or-leave-it energy. We were ready to settle for the “least bad” option when someone recommended Ray Plante & Sons. I’m still not sure how they didn’t make our initial list — but we are so grateful they came into the picture. From the beginning, Mike was polite, courteous, and incredibly patient. He walked us through every detail, explained our options, answered every question (and we had many), and made sure we fully understood and felt comfortable with the plan. His quote was higher than our original one, but aligned with other estimates — and it felt fair and honest. When DEM’s test hole indicated we’d need a pump (an added cost), Mike went above and beyond to make sure this was a necessary expense. He reviewed options, confirmed it was required, and ensured it was billed as a true pass-through cost with no markup. That level of transparency is rare. Other contractors had warned us with vague “we might find something and you’ll just have to pay for it” disclaimers — the kind of thing that makes homeowners understandably wary. Mike was the opposite of that. His crew was also fantastic — kind, respectful, communicative — and genuinely pleasant to have on our property for the week. Since all of this happened right before Halloween, we were nervous about having a large pit in the yard. They made sure everything was safe and secure for trick-or-treaters. The finished work is perfect. The new system is in, fully functional, and we are literally relieved. ;) Thank you, Mike, for your professionalism, patience, and honesty. We will be recommending you exclusively — especially as neighbors start facing their own system replacements in the coming years. Ray Plante & Sons has earned a customer for life.
These guys are great. Mike was out at our home gave us an estimate. We were on a waiting list as they are very busy. But when they came out to install a whole new septic system they did more than a fantastic job. They cleaned up the yard after they were done put back things in the yard that they moved. Did a great job. We will use them for any upcoming pumping or any other things that pop up. But for now we are very happy we waited for them to do the job.
