Ryan Landscaping & Lawn Care traces its start, by its own account, to Joe Ryan III mowing a few lawns in his neighborhood at age 12; the website says he grew the business through high school and hired friends to keep it going while he was away at college. Its Better Business Bureau profile lists landscaping and lawn care services and shows an A+ grade. On Google it sits at 2.3 stars from 7 ratings. A 2024 customer who hired Joe Ryan for landscaping, grass seeding and mulching said he never let them know beforehand that he would be at the property, and that he charged top dollar for dirt and fill that was mostly rocks. A 2024 customer said they were verbally quoted $4,000 to remove two Alberta spruces, weed beds, mulch and lay stone around the side of the house, deck, shed and fire pit area. That 2024 customer said the worker did not dig down 4 inches and put the stone over a tarp, that edging was not done, and that roots from the removed spruces were left sticking above ground. The same 2024 customer said the stone work was never redone and they ended up redoing most of the work themselves. A 2024 customer who gave two stars wrote that he took care of their home in Pittsfield.

I did quite a bit of work with Joe Ryan this year both landscaping, grass seeding and mulching. It was a complete displeasure working with him. Joe has zero communication skills and never let me know once beforehand that he would be at my property. He charged top dollar for dirt/fill that was mostly rocks and his grass seed and plantings were subpar. I would not use him again for anything.
I would not recommend this business. Shame on me for not asking for written estimate with break down of labor and materials cost. I was headed out of town for a month and needed landscaping done while I was gone. Verbally quoted me 4k for removing two Alberta Spruces, weeding beds, mulching, and installing 3/4 inch stone around side of house, deck, small shed, and outdoor fire pit area. The worker didn’t even dig down 4 inches before putting stone down. He just put tarp on ground and put stone over it. Edging was not done and they left roots sticking above ground from removed spruces. They were supposed to install wood chips around back tree line but never did. When I complained they told me they fired the worker. I had a final payment of $1500 due so they came back and did a minimum amount of improvements in order to make things look ok. They never re-did the stone work that was laid on top of the ground. This was in September/October of 2023. The grass grew up through the rocks and I ended up having to re-do most of the work myself this year. The owner does not seem to care about the quality of his work or reputation.
He took care of my home in Pittsfield.
