Roy Descoteaux has been the guy for one Amherst-area household since 2017. He replaced their windows and a slider, knocked one window out to make it a double, put on vinyl siding, did cabinet work, and was rebuilding their porch when they wrote about him in June 2023. Windows are what people get specific about. A customer writing in October 2021 had every window in the house replaced in a single day and said the pricing was fair and the options explained plainly. Another in November 2021 waited about two months for two bay windows during the pandemic supply squeeze, was told that up front, was copied on the window vendor's own estimate, and paid exactly that number; the install took under two days. A June 2022 customer put in more than 25 new-construction windows and said questions on the punch list got answered. In May 2023 someone hunting a coil balance for a BF Rich window said Pam chased the part down for them. One customer drew a line. In a July 2022 one-star review they said Roy is probably fine if you just want a window replaced — and that they would not trust him with anything beyond that. Google shows 4.4 stars across seven ratings, and the written accounts run from 2021 to 2023, so this is a small shop with a short paper trail rather than a deep one. For a window or door replacement around Amherst it is a reasonable call, particularly if you want the manufacturer's quote in front of you the way one customer described. For anything larger — siding, a porch, carpentry — get the scope and the schedule written down before work starts.
Roy has done so much work for us since 2017 when he replaced our windows, an our slider. One of the window, we had him knock out to be a double. He's done vinyl siding for us, cabinet work, fixed a leaking toilet among other. He is currently re-doing our porch from from these 91" high plate glass windows that have to be manually taken down and put back up to casement windows and a slider. We continue to trust his work and costs. He has never given us a bad job.
I needed a part for my BF Rich window, and Pam has gone above and beyond to locate a coil balance! Awesome service! Thanks Pam.
I can see that this company has several 5-star reviews, and so I feel that I should share my opposite experience. Roy Descoteaux is probably fine if you're just looking to replace a window, and maybe that’s why he’s getting good reviews. But I wouldn't trust him to do anything more than that. He represents himself as a contractor who can do other kinds of work, which is why we hired him to replace our window with a slider and build stairs from the slider to the backyard. He was also supposed to install a gate and stairs from our deck. There were lots of problems and I regret hiring him. 1. While doing electrical work, he cut our HVCA temperature sensor wire, which cost us $300 to replace. Fortunately, he agreed to subtract that amount from the price. 2. We found out later that the steps he built are in violation of building code. Stairs should have a riser heigh of no greater than 7-3/4". He built our steps at 8-3/4" 3. He refused to install railing on the steps he built from the slider and was going to charge us more to install them until his wife reminded him that it was specified in the original contract and included in the price. 4. Shoddy workmanship and improper installation. He installed the gate door improperly. The door cannot open/close because its own weight pulls it down and prevents it from engaging with the latch assembly; Roy's "band-aid" fix was to attach a cross brace that he installed backwards, and it did not fix the problem. 5. No pride of workmanship. Everything looks pretty bad. When he installed the slider, he had to remove portions of the hardwood floor and replace them after installing the slider. He replaced the flooring, but used a short 2” long floor board piece when he ran out of pieces (see photo). He didn’t care how it looked, and when I expressed concern, he suggested that I cover it up with a rug and it didn’t matter because nobody would notice it. Fortunately, he later agreed to fix it. There were other issues, but I think I've already made my point. Overall, I think a lot of the problems stem from the same major issue with Roy - that he just wants to get the job done quickly, so he cuts corners like violating building codes. We will have to tear down everything he did and pay someone to fix it. I would not recommend him to anyone I care about.
Quick response, clear about options and pricing, good quality work. Had 25+ new construction windows installed. Resolved any questions or concerns we had on our punch list.
Best price in area. Two bay windows took approx 2 months to arrive because of pandemic supply chain issues; I was informed of this up front. Was copied on window vendor's price estimate; that's exactly what I paid. Install was less than 2 full days. Quality work adding additional insulation above bays. Trimmed outside with PVC (will never rot); again the install estimate was exactly what I paid. For any future window or door needs will definitely call S R Windows & Doors Plus.
