Sudbury Design Group is a landscape architecture, construction and estate-care firm based in Sudbury, with a website that says it's worked Greater Boston, New England and Cape Cod for more than 50 years. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active, verified with the state registry. The firm has picked up real recognition over the years — 9x and 12x Best of Houzz badges are both listed, along with a Best of Boston win — and its Houzz page shows a 5.0 rating across nine reviews and 42 completed projects. Its written record includes genuine praise spanning nearly two decades: in reviews from 2007 and 2008, John O'Brien is credited with a kitchen remodel customers called 'pure heaven'; in a 2021 review, a client called project lead Matt Sullivan a 'rock star' who treated their job like it was the most important in the firm's portfolio, even though SDG has handled projects at a much larger scale. Set against that is a real run of serious complaints. A 2014 account describes the firm collecting a $5,000 deposit, then reducing the promised scope of work and disputing the agreed repayment. A 2018 review flatly calls the company 'a scam.' And an October 2024 review, from a next-door neighbor rather than a client, described a loud, dirty jobsite with no consideration for the people living beside it, including stone being cut and shipped off the property with disregard for the neighboring lot. The firm's Angi listing places it in Wayland, MA, while its own site and the state registry both put it in Sudbury — worth confirming which address is current. For a substantial landscape or design-build project, this is an established, awarded firm with real high-end craftsmanship in its history, but the deposit dispute, the 2018 complaint, and the 2024 neighbor account are all serious enough to ask about directly — get contract terms, a jobsite conduct policy, and references from a recent project in writing before committing a deposit.
Company does extraordinary work!
As in butter to one of their projects, I have to say that they have the worst customer service. Absolutely no consideration for the people that are next-door so they’re very loud very dirty project with no consideration on doing things like cutting Stone off property and then shipping it in. When you complaint you just get hung up on and told that they are glad they could help you. I would not recommend them for anything
If we could give more than 5 stars, we would. Our project was led by Matt Sullivan, who is quite simply a rock star. He's everything you'd want in a Quarterback or Leader for any large scale project, and is a phenomenal representative of SDG. While SDG has undoubtedly completed many projects of much greater size & scale, they treated ours like it was the most important one in their portfolio. The entire team was professional, friendly, on time and very skilled at their individual specialties. Our project involved a back yard renovation centered on a new pool, and deck/kitchen/entertainment area. We had carpenters (Elmo is incredible), masons, and landscapers from SDG, along with a kitchen redesign from a company they recommended and partnered with beautifully. There were no surprises, and they never said 'No' if we had a new idea or something we wanted tweaked in the plans. They were able to offer us higher end options where/when we wanted, but always with an option to stay 'on budget.' They dealt with outside 3rd parties, the Town of Needham and a variety of other people that we didn't have the time or expertise to work with. The depth and breadth of their knowledge is truly impressive. I would recommend SDG without reservation!
This company is a scam.
After multiple visits to our home to determine the feasibility and costs for the job John collected a $5K deposit. The promised work was later reduced and the company agreed to return the deposit; a disputed repayment followed.
