Thoreau Landscape Company is the kind of crew homeowners call when the yard needs more than routine maintenance: tree removal, drainage work, patios, and a broader outdoor redesign. The company says it has served Norfolk and Suffolk County since 2001 and has been in business for 25 years; its website describes landscape design and construction, tree care, masonry, hardscape and softscape work, snow removal, and fence installation in Metro West and Greater Boston. The strongest thread in the reviews is careful, efficient outdoor work. In an August 2025 Google review, a homeowner said Matt and his team removed two 60–70-foot silver maples in more than four hours and left the property immaculate. An April 2025 review describes the safe removal of a large dying Norway maple within hours. Older reviews also describe two dry wells and underground downspout work that corrected basement drainage, plus sod and patio installation. A 2022 customer praised the craftsmanship on hardscaping and landscaping, while another said the team transformed a backyard into a more usable family space. The practical item to settle before booking is licensing. The Massachusetts registry lists the company’s HIC license 211850 as expired as of August 31, 2026; BuildZoom shows the same number as expired. Ask what registration is current for the specific work and confirm the scope, drainage plan, debris removal, and any permitting before work begins. Thoreau looks suited to homeowners planning substantial landscape, tree, or hardscape projects and wanting one team to coordinate the outdoor work. Its written review history is small but consistently positive, with eight reviews from 2021–2025; the license status is the key point to resolve first.

Matt and his team took down two silver maples in my yard and did an absolutely superb job. I couldn't be more pleased. They were incredibly efficient (>4 hours) to remove two 60-70ft trees, doing an immaculate job removing all debris and detritus. What I appreciated was Matt's friendly personality and his attention to the client's needs. I have had many subpar experiences with tree removal companies in the Boston area. He is punctual and communicative. Without a doubt, both me (and my neighbors) will use Thoreau for any of our future tree removal and trimming needs. Thanks so much!
Matt and his team did a terrific job removing a large, dying Norway Maple from our front yard. Within hours the tree was safely taken down and chopped up. What I enjoy most about working with Matt is that he also comes with ideas. Now that the tree is gone, and with it some old shrubs, he and I are already brainstorming on how to replant the area and my partner and I are excited to see those ideas come to life.
Had water coming into the basement for the first time in the 15 years living here. Matt and the crew did 2 Dry Wells and took another two downspouts away from the house neatly underground, now everything drains properly away from the foundation. Nice and dry now. This team did the work on schedule, showing up exactly when they were supposed to, and on budget and work is top quality. Highly recommended!
Excellent service. Installed sod and put in a patio for us.
Matt was friendly and professional; did an estimate and delivered on time and at budget. Craftsmanship is great, didn’t spare any detail related to the hardscaping and landscaping. I would highly recommend for any landscaping or hardscaping!
