Ulrich Landscape Collaborative works from the drawing board: Matthew Ulrich's Beverly practice designs the yard — planting plans, hardscape, patios, pool surrounds, construction drawings — and then oversees the build rather than sending its own install crew. Three employees, incorporated in 2016, also trading as UBLA Residential. On Houzz it holds 5.0 stars from 24 ratings alongside 20 project galleries. The written reviews there were posted between 2017 and 2019, and the same notes recur. A 2019 client wrote that the work started on the schedule they had discussed and finished faster than expected; another that year described a large yard turned "from a wilderness into an estate" with many of its natural elements kept. Cost control comes up more than once in 2017: one reviewer credited his grasp of installation costs with setting a workable budget early, and another said the project stayed under budget. Several of those reviews were written by architects and contractors who brought him onto their own jobs. Two things shape how you would hire them. The Houzz profile self-reports a typical project between $25,000 and $500,000, so this is whole-yard design money rather than a maintenance call. And since the practice designs and administers rather than installs, settle early who is doing the building — one 2019 client asked Matt to take on project management once construction began. Its Better Business Bureau page is an A+, and the Houzz profile lists American Society of Landscape Architects membership and LEED Accredited Professional credentials. A sensible call for a homeowner planning a designed landscape with a real budget behind it: ask how the design fee and the construction oversight are billed separately, and ask to walk a recent project.
Matt was referred to us by our architect who we worked with in our home renovation. In our experience good people tend to refer good people. Matt was no exception. He was perfectly consultative in the project, providing us with great options for a project that was more difficult than normal due to some zoning peculiarities. In addition to his great work on the landscape architecture side, he referred an exceptional landscaping contractor to execute the work, and paired together their work is some of the best contracting work we've had done at our home. The project entailed a very strategic reconfiguration of our driveway as well as a new layout for the remainder of the open space on the property.
Matt did an amazing job for us. His creativity and personal attention to detail transformed our large yard from a wilderness into an estate while maintaining many natural landscape elements. He and his staff were very easy and pleasant to work with. Matt genuinely cares about his projects, listens carefully to clients, and strives to make them happy. We highly recommend Matt and would not hesitate to work with him again.
We began working with Matt of UBLA Residential for the design of our front and back yards and then asked him to serve as the project manager once construction began. At each phase of the project, Matt was excellent and always professional. During the design phase, he listened to our needs and preferences, provided invaluable guidance given his years of experience, and put together a beautiful proposal. As the project manager, he handled all the ups and downs of construction graciously and made it all look (and feel!) so simple. He provided us regular updates on progress and was responsive to our questions and ideas throughout each phase. Ultimately, we now have a front and back yard that is beautiful and functional, and that exceeds our expectations.

Matthew was wonderful to work with! A truly talented designer, collaborator and listener. In addition to his creativity, he has a firm understanding of the installation costs of the design being proposed, which helped us to establish a workable budget early in the process.
