Twenty-four five-star ratings on Houzz, and the same thing keeps happening inside them: Matt Ulrich draws the yard, then rides herd on whoever builds it. The firm works out of 156 Cabot Street in Beverly. Its BBB profile puts the start date at October 2016, lists three employees, names Matthew Ulrich as owner, and records an alternate name — UBLA Residential — that several reviewers actually use. The BBB grades it A+ without the company being accredited there. Houzz lists LEED Accredited Professional credentials and an American Society of Landscape Architects affiliation, and the service list reads as design work: landscape plans, site planning, patio and pool design, construction drawings, 3D rendering, project management. That shape shows up in what clients wrote. In a November 2019 review a homeowner described a driveway reconfiguration complicated by zoning peculiarities, and said Ulrich then referred the landscaping contractor who executed it — the pair together, they wrote, produced some of the best contracting work done at their home. Another client that October hired him for the design and kept him on as project manager once construction started, citing regular progress updates through each phase. A December 2017 client credited him with knowing installation costs well enough to set a workable budget early, then engaging and overseeing the trades on their behalf. Architects turn up in the reviews as well: one firm writing in April 2017 called him a go-to landscape designer for its North Shore residential projects. That cuts both ways — a chunk of the praise comes from professional partners rather than homeowners. Two things to weigh before calling. The written accounts stop in November 2019, so nothing published speaks to how the practice runs now. And this is a design and construction-administration outfit — Houzz puts a typical job between $25,000 and $500,000 — not a crew that shows up to plant. If you want someone to plan a whole property and hold the installers to the drawings, that is exactly the job described here. Ask for a current reference, pin down what construction administration covers, and confirm who is doing the physical work.
Matt was referred to us by our architect who we worked with in our home renovation. In our experience good people tend to refer good people. Matt was no exception. He was perfectly consultative in the project, providing us with great options for a project that was more difficult than normal due to some zoning peculiarities. In addition to his great work on the landscape architecture side, he referred an exceptional landscaping contractor to execute the work, and paired together their work is some of the best contracting work we've had done at our home. The project entailed a very strategic reconfiguration of our driveway as well as a new layout for the remainder of the open space on the property.
Matt did an amazing job for us. His creativity and personal attention to detail transformed our large yard from a wilderness into an estate while maintaining many natural landscape elements. He and his staff were very easy and pleasant to work with. Matt genuinely cares about his projects, listens carefully to clients, and strives to make them happy. We highly recommend Matt and would not hesitate to work with him again.
We began working with Matt of UBLA Residential for the design of our front and back yards and then asked him to serve as the project manager once construction began. At each phase of the project, Matt was excellent and always professional. During the design phase, he listened to our needs and preferences, provided invaluable guidance given his years of experience, and put together a beautiful proposal. As the project manager, he handled all the ups and downs of construction graciously and made it all look (and feel!) so simple. He provided us regular updates on progress and was responsive to our questions and ideas throughout each phase. Ultimately, we now have a front and back yard that is beautiful and functional, and that exceeds our expectations.
Very happy working with UBLA Residential! Easy to communicate and the design was so professional and perfect for what we wanted. They started right on the schedule we discussed and completed even faster than I thought. Everything looks beautiful.
Matthew was wonderful to work with! A truly talented designer, collaborator and listener. In addition to his creativity, he has a firm understanding of the installation costs of the design being proposed, which helped us to establish a workable budget early in the process. When it came time build the project, Matt was able to engage and oversee the various trades on our behalf, and the end result has exceeded our expectations!
