Dan Bender of Wilderscaping performed what can only be described as a botanical exorcism on my front yard. What was once a dystopian hellscape of invasive black swallow wort and general despair is now a serene, gorgeous space that looks intentional, peaceful, and somehow…alive. In a good way. Dan not only eradicated the swallow wort that was taking over my yard like an infestation from a post-apocalyptic movie, but he also designed a landscape specifically for someone like me — a person who kills plants through what I can only assume is a rare and powerful gift. These are truly Judi-proof plants. Neglect-tolerant. Chaos-resistant. Built for survival. And yet despite being hardy enough to survive me, everything looks beautiful, natural, and thoughtfully designed. Dan knows his stuff. He understands native plants, ecosystems, invasives, and how to create spaces that feel both wild and calming at the same time.
