You Can Do It Gardening is a Boston-area garden coaching and consulting business built around one idea: teach homeowners to manage their own outdoor spaces rather than doing the digging for them. Founder Jess Zander launched the company in 2022 after realizing the coaching approach could work as its own service, and she still runs it herself, meeting clients in person and over video calls across Greater Boston. Google reviewers describe walkthroughs where Zander identifies invasive plants, explains pruning technique, and leaves clients with a concrete plan for their yard rather than a finished job — the kind of hands-on teaching that shows up again and again across her 305 Google ratings, five stars in every review on file. Regional and national outlets have covered the same pattern: a WCVB segment had her walking through when to prune, and a gardenrant.com writeup described clients holding their own phones while she talks them through changing border lines in their own yards. The one thing worth understanding going in is the model itself — this is coaching and consultation, not installation. Her own site and the outside coverage describe her guiding homeowners through the work rather than performing it, so anyone expecting a crew to show up and dig should plan on doing the labor themselves with her direction. For a homeowner who wants to learn their yard rather than hand it off — identifying what's actually growing, learning to prune correctly, building a realistic plan — this is a good fit. Worth confirming what a session covers and whether it includes any follow-up before booking.
“Thanks to You Can Do It Gardening (Jess Zander) for guiding this week’s challenge and helping people take that first step toward restoring habitat at home.”
“The You Can Do It Gardener helps people grow confidence and joy in their own backyards.”
“I’m also enjoying the videos of coach Jessica Zander talking to her Boston-area clients. In fact, the videos are made BY clients, FOR them, Jess told me in our chat. Clients hold their phones while she shows them what to do in their very own garden – changing border lines, moving plants, pruning, getting rid of plants, with plenty of laughing while she’s doing it. Her coaching advice reminds me a lot of what I used to tell clients, but with a lot more personality. ... And gotta love the title – You Can Do It Gardening – and the attitude it conveys. Per her website: “Doing it yourself can save”
“Former nonprofit executive and social media maven Jess Zander coaches aspiring gardeners to grow not just plants, but confidence.”
“Jess explained in a video on her You Can Do It Gardening (@youcandoitgardening) TikTok page.”
“Jess is a Boston-based garden coach and consultant who launched You Can Do It Gardening in 2022 to help everyday people feel confident tackling their gardens—no matter their experience level.”
Jess is amazing - she has the unique blend of expertise about all things plants / trees, great design sense, and a wonderful warm way about her. After our consult, we came away with a million ideas, a clear way to start making progress, and a belief in ourselves that we can take the next steps we want to in our yard. Highly recommend!
Jess was great! She knew a lot about the plants and her advice was really good. She is friendly and down to earth. She walked me through how to prune plants back and really care for the garden rather than just water and pull weeds. I’d totally recommend Jess.
Jess was extremely helpful in coming up with a plan for my yard! She is extremely knowledgable about invasive species and helped me identify several I hadn't noticed yet. She worked to understand my goals and made very practical suggestions for my various garden spaces. I can't wait to see my yard transform!
Jessica spent the time to walk around my property to identify invasive and problematic plants. She explained how to trim trees and shrubs, and she helped me to plan a larger planting area with a variety of plants, shrubs, and trees, to allow for color from spring to fall. She generously shared her knowledge with me. I definitely think I can handle this now! I definitely recommend having her help you to be come better acquainted with your back yard!
First Id like to say that I know nothing about gardening but know that I want a nice looking front yard. I say this so you wont hesitate to book Jess because it was so easy with a video consultation to get a design and now I have a plan. I cant wait to implement. At the end I have a design and notes to refer back to. Edit- used the design plan, added photos as a tool. Before and after pics. Part 1
