6 GEN Masonry is a one-man, appointment-only operation built around Phil Cote, a mason based in Milford, New Hampshire whose website traces six generations of family masonry work back to 1884, without stating exactly when the LLC itself was founded. He works across New England taking on stonework, brickwork, fireplace construction and outdoor living spaces, but the specialty that dominates his reviews by a wide margin is chimneys — rebuilds, relining, reflashing leak repairs, masonry caps, firebox and damper fixes. What comes through across 21 reviews from 2023 to 2026, every one five stars, is how much of a following Phil has built by word of mouth. More than one reviewer describes being told by everyone they asked that Phil was the person to call, then waiting months for a slot — one says nine months, another calls it "well worth the wait to get on his schedule." Once the work starts, the recurring theme is craftsmanship people describe as closer to art than contracting: custom stonework built from reclaimed antique granite, mortar color matched on a historic home, a stone fireplace one reviewer says made them realize a mason could be an artist. Several customers have hired him more than once — for a chimney rebuild, then a fireplace refacing, then a retaining wall — and reviewers repeatedly mention fair, transparent pricing with no pressure to add scope. One review even describes a same-week response to a broken mailbox, a small job handled with the same professionalism as the larger ones. There's nothing negative in any of the 21 reviews on file. The one thing worth flagging is pace: with a single review recorded in the last six months against a much busier run in 2024 and 2025, it's worth calling ahead to check current availability given the waitlist reviewers describe. For anyone with a historic chimney, a fireplace that needs real craftsmanship, or a stonework project where the finish matters as much as the structure, 6 GEN Masonry's reviewers describe exactly that kind of work — the main thing to plan for is the wait to get on Phil's calendar.
Phil did a great job repairing a firebox and damper that had been damaged by previous owners.
All referrals pointed to Phil at 6 Gen Masonry. Given his reputation we were willing to wait 9 months for him to start our project and we were not disappointed! The level of quality is so high it becomes art, not merely masonry. On top of this, Phil is fantastic to work with. If you want the best, you found it with 6 Gen Masonry.
In 2021 I had a new roof put on my house and as part of the roofing job they reflashed my chimney. However 6 or 7 months later, after a heavy rain storm I noticed water on the attic floor around the base of the chimney and my chimney was soaked, So I called the company that did my roof and they came right back to see what the issue was. Turns out my chimney on the back side was all deteriorated and needed attention. I reached out to Phil from 6 Gen Masonry and he came over to take a look. He confirmed that my chimney was basically junk and needed to be rebuilt. He also said that it may need to be relined but he could not tell for sure until he actually started to rebuild it. And of course it did!! The problem was my chimney has 3 flues and the one going to the boiler which was the one needing to be relined has an off-set. So it was not going to be an easy replacement. And it wasn’t! Several attempts were made to get the new liner down with no success. Phil thought a small liner would do the trick but NOPE! That one was not going down without a fight either. SO at the end of the day Phil and a fellow mason had to basically open up the chimney in the garage and work the liner down from there, with the liner fighting them ever step of the way!! But with a lot of maneuvering the battle was won and Phil was able to get the liner installed. There is a saying….”there is NO substitute for experience” and it is so true. I doubt a mason with less experience would have had the knowledge or technical expertise to accomplish this task. Phil is a 6th generation mason, (hence the company name) and all that experience in his DNA must have been the guiding force at work. In the end my chimney is beautiful and the crowning jewel is my large black cap that finishes it off perfectly. I cannot recommend Phil enough for all thing "Masonry"! He is a perfectionist and takes great pride in his craft and it shows.
Fantastic and very good personalized discussion and description of the plan. What’s prompt and detail oriented. Meticulous and setting up and cleaning. Quality exceeded expectations. He went out of his way to accommodate unplanned work for time Sensitive work on a home remodel. Highly recommend, deliveries, high-quality work
I am absolutely thrilled with the work Phil from 6 GEN Masonry did at my home. Phil is truly a master of his craft—his attention to detail and pride in his work are unmatched. It was well worth the wait to get on his schedule. The job was completed on time, and every one of my retired neighbors stopped by to comment on how methodical and careful he was with every step. You can see the genuine care he put into my home, and it shows—my chimney is now the envy of the entire neighborhood! If you want quality workmanship and someone who genuinely respects your property, I can’t recommend Phil enough. Five stars, without question.
