A. Thomas & Sons is a second-generation, family-owned landscaping and nursery business in Milton, Massachusetts. Owner Bunny Thomas says he took over from his father in 1975; the company now describes landscape design and installation, hardscapes, masonry, nursery stock, mulch, plants, trees, and garden décor, with three landscaping crews, two masonry teams, and a full-service garden center. Customers consistently describe a large plant and tree selection, helpful staff, and strong landscaping work. A 2025 reviewer said the crew removed tangled shrub stumps and installed a privacy screen of arborvitae, while 2023 customers praised the landscaping crew’s thoroughness and the guidance available for redoing a yard. The record is mixed on service reliability. Recent reviews include a complaint about staff helpfulness, while older reviews report rude service, plants dying, delivery mistakes, poor follow-up, seasonal closures without clear notice, and concerns about pricing. Before buying plants or hiring installation, confirm seasonal hours, delivery terms, plant guarantees, follow-up responsibility, and the exact scope of landscape or masonry work. The nursery may fit homeowners and commercial landscapers seeking broad plant and garden-product selection with on-site design and installation support. Ask for a written estimate and current references for comparable planting, hardscape, or masonry projects.
“I have different shades of coneflowers, but on Friday I spotted this brilliant red one above at A. Thomas & Sons Nursery in Milton and, of course, it had to come home with me.”
“A. Thomas & Sons Nursery”
Huge nursery w/ huge selection of trees that you can find in the back of the building. Less selection on flowers but a pretty cool place to peruse (and bring your kid to wander around!)
Shop had a great selection at affordable prices and kind and resourceful staff! Thank you to the worker who helped us fit our plant selection into our Uber!
They have a lot of amazing products in the store, some I can't find sold anywhere else near me. It is like someone created the perfect layout and products, but the in-house staff are just not good.i would never say that about staff, but they really are not helping their store. Three times I have visited and shopped, and nothing indoors has a price tag, and some of the plants outside do not have their labels. No one comes up and asks if you need help. The people in the store will walk away, or just not be there at all, even though they are designated to be there. They often will literally ignore someone at the register to keep talking with their family. When I came in for a specific rose bush from a specific company with a specific name, which they ran out of, I was not mad they didn't have it. I was astonished at how inappropriate the staff were. The shop owner came in yelling 'where all his staff went?'. Then a woman came in and when I asked her about the rosebush, like any new shipments or if I missed it. I showed her the exact picture of the label and roses. She literally just pointed to a rose bush near me and suggested maybe that was it. She then questioned the owner, and when asked what color it was, she replied red, he put pink roses on the register saying this must be it then. I was astonished, I wasn't sure if it was slight sexism that he assumed I would think these were the same and just take it, Or general unprofessionalism to try and pressure me into buying the wrong product. The customer service is wildly unprofessional at worse and neglectful at best. And I want to visit this place again because of the products but they really need to hire actual customer service and not just their family members.
Good stuff place too walk around
Excellent collection of unique garden statues, planters, colorful seasonal décor like gnomes and mushroom accents, plants, plant food, soil & fertilizer etc. It’s not just a plant nursery; it feels more like a curated garden shop with personality. The outdoor area is well laid out, with a wide selection of large pots, fountains, and ornamental pieces that can really elevate a backyard space. I also appreciated the variety of plants and trees available, which is great if you don’t want to start from scratch. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re looking to upgrade your garden or just want some inspiration.
