B & L Construction says its work runs from commercial paving and underground utilities to sitework, septic systems and mulch and stone delivery. The company says it has been in business 33 years, and its BBB grade is A+. A recent customer says their driveway was re-graded, enlarged, given a new drain and finished with stone and block edging, and that John, their project manager, helped with the design and materials selection. A 2026 customer who described themselves as an engineer said B&L tore out and repaved a 5,000 sq. ft circular driveway three years earlier and that the asphalt had not cracked anywhere. That 2026 customer said the elevations were surveyed and laser measured and the base went through many rounds of vibratory roller compaction, and that B&L's cost was over $4,000 less than another paving contractor's estimate. A 2024 customer said a broken water pipe ran under a sidewalk of pavers and a landscape garden, and that Corey, the lead man, planned a repair that used special tooling to avoid digging there. That 2024 customer said a plastic pipe was replaced with a new copper pipe and the area was replanted with grass seed. A 2024 customer said B&L paved the driveway and created an additional parking area at their home in Old Lyme, then came back a few days later to spread topsoil and mulch around the perimeter. A 2024 customer said Alan at the company helped hunt down the stone color they wanted for a regraded gravel driveway. A 2022 reviewer who runs a landscaping business said B&L paved customers' driveways after their own work and left the sites neat and tidy. A 2022 Clinton resident said Connecticut Water chose B and L to replace the water lines in Clinton, and that their garden plantings were not lost. The company also sells landscape materials, and a 2023 customer wrote that it carries at least 40 types and styles of crushed stone. A 2023 reviewer gave one star after one of the company's men stepped into traffic on 81 so a truck could get into a job site, saying they nearly had to pump their brakes. Our driveway was re-graded, enlarged, new drain installed, and replaced with stone and block edging. John, our project manager, was responsive and very helpful in the overall design process and materials selection. The project also entailed engaging with another hardscaping contractor, which was managed efficiently. The crew was prompt and very efficient, with good attention to detail and without the need for any oversight on our part. The end result is just lovely. I highly recommend B&L for your driveway needs - they provide quality products and excellent service at a very reasonable cost.
B&L performed my 5,000 sq. ft circular driveway tear out and repave job 3 years ago and it is holding up remarkably well. The asphalt hasn't cracked anywhere even with huge trucks (180 ft boom crane, dump trucks) driving off the edges to do work on my property. B&L's sub-base preparation is far superior to what you'd normally get in residential driveway building. They surveyed and laser measured elevations and made sure they knew where water was going. The job was graded with a road grader and went through many rounds of vibratory roller compaction. The base was so hard, you could see dump trucks the day of paving didn't leave an indentation in it. They made sure the base gravel was wider than where they paved so the shoulders of the asphalt are properly supported. The finished pavement never pools water and the shoulders haven't cracked anywhere. B&L owns an impressive assortment of new Komatsu equipment, which was fun to see in action (especially the swivel head backhoe) but I was even more impressed by their people. Everyone, including the laborers doing hand work, took pride in their work and the end result shows. I am a picky engineer and I am not often satisfied. I am satisfied with the work B&L did. To top it off, B&L's cost was over $4,000 less expensive than the other well known paving contractor's estimate.
