Cambridge Animal Control fields the city's day-to-day animal calls — dog licensing, loose or injured wildlife, and stray or nuisance complaints — and its Google reviews tell two different stories depending on why someone called. Across 11 reviews spanning 2022 to 2025, the tone splits close to the middle: people who reached out for routine help, like sorting out a wildlife issue or a license, describe staff as helpful and responsive. Others who ended up on the receiving end of enforcement — a ticket or citation over how a dog was being supervised in public — describe the experience as heavy-handed, and more than one calls it harassment. That split is the thing to know going in: this isn't a contractor you shop around for, but an office you'll deal with either for a straightforward request or because animal control flagged something. The friendlier reviews suggest a routine request gets handled promptly and courteously. The critical ones center specifically on how citations get issued and enforced, not on incompetence or no-shows. With only 15 Google ratings behind its 3.7-star average and no other independent source turning up a matching profile, there isn't a deep public record to lean on — enough to see the pattern, not enough to call it settled either way.

It’s amazing the difference in the culture between the parking department and animal control. Went to Cambridge animal control (last minute) for a dog license (needed prior to boarding) and the gentleman who helped us, Michael, couldn’t have been more helpful. He went above and beyond. We really appreciate your service!

I work in a school and called because there was a bat low on a tree in our playground. It wasn't active but we worried about having it in the same space as the kids. Mystique came right out and gently captured & relocate it. She was friendly & great with the kids!

Would give them zero if I could. As previous reviews noted, they harass owners for everything and anything. Recently, they wrote a ticket and literally accused my 76 year old mother of “ being cruel” for leaving our dog in front of Trader Joe’s while she entered to buy something. The dog was of course fine, supposedly my mother endangered the dog since the dog did not have water while she was shopping. My kind 76 year old mom who had dogs her whole life and was taking care of mine while our family was on a trip was accused of cruelty ! They took my dog to their car, throwing defamatory accusations at my mother who was beside herself and in tears, and she almost ended up in emergency room that day as her blood pressure went through the roof after this. They traumatized both my mother and my dog who was very happy to return home where she is loved and very well taken care of. As others suggested, it would be better if they put their efforts where it is really needed, create policies , improve conditions, just an example: how about installing a shade or a water bowl in front of Trader Joe’s and Whole foods, post office…a place where we can safely leave our dogs while we shop or run quick errand. For their information dog owners cannot take dogs inside food stores, but luckily dogs do not die without having water for 15-30 min, they are more resilient than that! Also , I do not see them patrolling around Formaggio’s where dogs are tied to the bench while their owners shop inside, but I guess this is a whole different story…

Thank you so much Rachel! I called the office last week, and got a call back early the next day. Super communicative, and considerate. I felt bad for calling, I didn’t want to be the annoying neighbor, reporting my neighbors’ dog. But she was so understanding and validating, and it was taken care of! Pretty sure the person who helped me was named, Rachel. Either way, thank you :)

I didn't deal with anyone face to face, but a poor mourning dove flew into my neighbors window as I was walking this morning. I submitted a report on their website to hopefully remove it before kids got home from school, or other animals got to it (it was dead w/ blood around it's head) - they had it gone within the hour. R.I.P dove, and thanks CAC.
