Clifford Oil Company delivers heating oil and propane out of Lenox. The company says it has been in business for 100 years and serves Lenox and towns throughout Berkshire County, and it describes itself as family owned and operated. A local news site has pictured Jeff Clifford, owner of Clifford Oil in Lenox Dale, standing on a supply of heating oil. A 2026 customer said that with a big storm coming and a delivery scheduled for Monday, the company delivered on Saturday instead. A 2026 customer called them always timely with their deliveries. In 2025, a customer whose propane tank was empty after another vendor missed a refill said Clifford sent a crew out Tuesday morning and they had propane again. A recent customer who had ordered oil from the company for a long time placed an online order and was then told the tank needed an inspection before delivery. That customer said the refund took more than a week and that the person who answered at the office was rude. A 2025 customer said that after complaining about a refused delivery the year before, they were told their account was flagged because the driver no longer wanted to deliver to their home.

I used to order oil from this company for a long time. It had been a couple of years because I hadn’t used much oil at my house. I went to place a delivery order on their online form and was asked if I was a current customer. I considered myself a customer so I clicked yes. I received a call from someone the next day saying that I needed my tank inspected prior to delivery. There was no indication on the form of this and I wouldn’t have placed the order if I had known that was required. When I said I couldn’t arrange the inspection, the person from Clifford offered to refund the money. End of conversation. More than a week goes by and there has been no refund! I call the office to get some clarity on the situation and the person who answers is rude and combative. Apparently, there was no one in the office who could submit a refund until a week after that intial conversation. She continued to be rude, despite it being a mess-up on their end. There was no apology for the other person not being clear about a refund timeline. There was no apology for their unclear inspection requirements. I should have been told from the get-go that my money would be held by Clifford for a week before a refund would be processed. We’re talking hundreds of dollars held up that should be back in my bank account asap! It should be spelled out on the order form that if it’s been more than X years that an inspection is required— not just if we are current customers. What is the timeline to be considered a “current customer”? I used to recommend this company to everyone because they seemed like a solid, small business that could be trusted. As a result of the office person’s behavior, I will never again recommend this company.
I can not relate AT ALL to the few people who have left poor reviews. We came on as new customers for Propane last fall and they have been top-notch in every way. Highly recommend. Ted / Becket, MA
Just realized I was lower than I thought in my tank. Big storm upcoming my delivery was scheduled for Monday. But just to make sure they took care of their customer they delivered on Saturday instead I just think that’s great business ownership.
These people are the best oil delivery I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with. They are so pleasant to deal with. They are professional and always timely with their deliveries. I would highly recommend them to anybody.
