Deck Specialists has built decks that customers returned to praise years later, alongside two detailed complaints about workmanship and follow-up. The Manchester company says it has been in business for 35 years and offers free estimates. Its Connecticut home improvement contractor registration is active. The most recent review, from September 2026, describes a deck built eight inches into a window opening, preventing installation of the planned privacy screen. The customer says pool gates were 36 inches high instead of the permit’s required 48 inches, with locks at 42 rather than 54 inches, and did not self-close. According to that customer, the town would not close the permit until those problems were corrected. The same account describes gates cut into railings, exposed three-foot holes and a concrete block used as the bottom stair step. An August 2024 customer reported five boards popping up within a year, marks and damage to siding and rails during construction, and repeated unanswered calls and emails. They said the owner ultimately refused to repair the boards despite their warranty objection, and they planned to hire someone else to fix the work. Other customers describe successful projects. In December 2024, one repeat customer praised an Ipe deck built 18 years earlier and a second-floor Azek PVC deck built that month. A May 2025 customer praised a deck refurbishment, fair pricing and the people doing the work. Google shows 3.5 stars from six ratings.
Poor Quality Deck Small upper deck was to be to the right of the slider and to the left of the window. Instead Deck Specialists made the deck 8” inside window so looks terrible inside and outside the house and couldn’t install the privacy screen because of it being inside the window. Building permit that Deck Specialists pulled from the town building department stated that both pool deck gates were required for pool safety to be 48” high and they made them only 36” high. Gate Locks were required to be 54” high and they made them only 42” high. Gates were required to be self-closing and they don’t self-close. The town will not close the building permit without these corrections. Gates were made too wide so they cut into the deck railings rather than remaking the gates. Several exposed 3 foot holes were left that could injure a person or pet. Made the stairs short so installed an exposed terrible looking cement block with sharp corners as the bottom step with an exposed piece of unfinished wood adhered to the side in the ground.
Very pleased with the job these guys recently did in refurbishing my deck. Excellent work, fair pricing and nice people. I would highly recommend them.
The Deck Specialists Inc. in Manchester, CT has built 2 decks for me. The larger custom deck was built 18 years ago with IPE wood and still looks great. The newer second floor smaller deck was built with Azek PVC material in Dec. 2024 and also greatly enhances the look of our house. I would strongly recommend them.
A+ Business, hard workers, fair pricing.
Run while you can. We had a deck put in a year ago. Within a year, 5 board popped up. Near doorways they cut scraps which looks horrible. Asked the owner during construction to please stop banging our new siding and rails as this "deck only" replacement. Spent hours with a Mr.Clean scrub pad removing marks, lots of chunks out of siding and rails. Owner is a poor communicator and will not speak with you, only texts. Called and emailed 12 times over 2 months and he finally got back with us to say I don't have to fix your boards. We told him its still under warranty, he didn't care. To be honest, we are hiring someone to clean up his mistakes. Worst contractor ever. Worst communication and sadly arrogant for shoddy work.
