Please run from this company. Don’t walk. RUN. I hired Downtown Painting in Spfld and Joel (the owner) to paint the entire interior of my home after it sustained significant damage during the winter storms. I had multiple contractors working on my house, and hiring this company was by far the worst experience of the entire renovation. His price was competitive, but there is truth to the saying, “You get what you pay for.” I don’t want anyone else to go through what I did. The problems started on the very first day. Joel called me while I was heading into a meeting and asked me to remind him which rooms needed to be painted. I was stunned. I thought, “You’re the owner. Didn’t you write this down?” I gave him a quick overview, but something in my gut told me this was going to be a problem. Unfortunately, I was right. My first mistake was giving him a 50% deposit. From there, everything went downhill. The crew was extremely slow. My general contractor noticed they would often arrive around 10:00 a.m. and leave around noon -1pm. Most days, it was just one person painting because Joel would leave. After an entire week, they still hadn’t finished painting just three rooms, one hallway, and the trim. My general contractor, who had numerous trades working at my home, also commented on how unusually slow their progress was. When I asked him to remove a small bathroom cabinet from the wall, he initially refused, saying it was “too hard.” He eventually did it, but it became a pattern of pushing back on basic requests. I also specifically asked them not to use one particular door in my home. They continued using it anyway. After I politely asked Joel again to stop coming through that door, he became upset and texted me saying he thought it would be best to finish the top floor and leave the rest of the project. I agreed because we had already discussed the day before that we were clearly not on the same page. I asked him to wait until I arrived so I could inspect the work before he left. He didn’t. When my mother and I arrived, he was already gone. The second bedroom on the third floor hadn’t even been painted. When I asked why, Joel claimed I had told him not to paint it. That is simply false. The bedroom closet also needed another coat, and the very next day my general contractor looked at the work and immediately said the top floor and bathroom both needed another coat of paint. How do you walk away from a job after collecting a 50% deposit without even completing the portion you said you would finish? Keep in mind, this wasn’t the entire project. There were still multiple rooms and additional floors left to paint. Communication was consistently frustrating. Anytime something wasn’t done correctly, Joel would say, “You didn’t ask me to do that.” My response was always the same: “It’s in the contract.” At one point he even told me, “I don’t sand.” That was shocking to hear from a professional painter. As if all of that wasn’t enough, after leaving the job, they took my general contractor’s 6-foot ladder. My contractor later texted me and said they had been using his ladder while they were working and that it was now missing. When I contacted Joel, he said he would “check” and bring it back if he had it. He returned the ladder later that day. I then asked if he had let anyone at the house know he had returned it. He claimed no one was there. My contractor told me everyone saw Joel pull into the driveway. Again, another dishonest response. This was one of the most unprofessional experiences I have ever had with a contractor. The work was incomplete, communication was poor, the quality was disappointing, and I was left paying a substantial deposit for a project that was never finished. I strongly recommend hiring someone else. I would never use Downtown Painting again and cannot recommend them based on my experience.
