The most useful thing about DR. Fix-it is the paper trail it leaves in other people's houses: BuildZoom lists residential remodels permitted under the company's name in Revere, Beverly and Peabody between 2007 and 2020, run out of 49 Salem Street in Swampscott by owner Heywood Bakst. What homeowners actually wrote is older and split down the middle. A December 2008 reviewer called the remodeling high-end and the crew skilled, efficient and meticulous. In November 2014 another said the crew turned up quickly, replaced rotted gutter and flashing, and sent photos before starting work — then left the rotten wood and nails behind. The one that should shape your questions is from October 2013. That customer described an owner who was pushy, was not onsite to oversee the construction, communicated poorly, and then went six months without coming back to finish the job. Angi's average across all three sits at 3.3. Before anything else, settle the registration. Massachusetts registry records show the company's home improvement contractor registration #180687 as expired, and BuildZoom separately lists both #180687 and a second number, #126273, as inactive. The written record here runs 2008 to 2014 — a long working history, but nothing recent from a customer. If you are considering them for a kitchen, a bath or small repairs on the North Shore, ask to see current registration and insurance, get the scope and finish schedule in writing, and ask for two jobs finished in the past year that you can go look at.
The Dr. Fixit crew came out quickly after some technical issues in the beginning. They were able to replace the gutter/flashing that had rotted and even sent pictures of it before work began. They did not take the junk (rotten wood, nails) with them however.
The owner was very pushy and he was NOT onsite during the construction to oversee the project. He did not communicate well AT ALL and while I've heard he has fallen ill recently, his business has not gotten back to me for SIX MONTHS in order to come finish the job they started. The paint job has already chipped, the nails were not replaced so there are rust stains on the white railings, etc. etc. etc. I don't believe this company will be in business much longer given the owner's health issues and I wish him all the best, but I would not recommend this company to anyone.
He does very high end quality remodeling; his crew is professional skillful & efficient. He is very knowledgeable about his trade, meticulous to detail and does exceptionally fine workmanship. I'd have no reservations about recommending him to anyone.
