A November 2020 customer wanted a cat walk — a long shelf with a ramp — which the crew had never built before. They built it. The woodshop is the heart of Haydenville Woodworking & Design, a Northampton design-build company that its site says was established in 1984 and has served the Pioneer Valley since, and that describes itself as a certified minority woman owned company. The woodwork is where the specifics pile up. In an October 2019 review, a customer with two yoga studios said the shelves the company designed and built hold her props in both rooms and match how those rooms look. A December 2016 client described a wall of kitchen cabinets that hid a stacked washer/dryer behind panelling and moved a sink a few feet, with the cabinet work copying the house's existing colonial-style panelling. A July 2019 reviewer singled out the closets and the crew's knack for turning a description into a finished piece. The bigger jobs run through the same shop. A February 2023 reviewer had the basement finished, and said the company stayed transparent when unexpected things came up and kept the job on time and on budget. A May 2023 client had two bathrooms renovated in an 1890s Victorian; a February 2024 client had the upstairs bathroom done plus a few small repairs around the house. A June 2019 reviewer counted two additions and a rebuilt deck, and a December 2014 client said their new house started and finished on schedule. The company has changed hands, and reviews track it. Clients writing between 2013 and 2017 name Lance Hodes as the principal — one January 2017 reviewer described a five-month, architecturally designed renovation and credited Lance with timing the carpenters and subcontractors closely. A February 2018 reviewer called the new ownership pleasant to work with, and Zinnia is named in eight reviews between 2018 and 2023, for design options, responsiveness and follow-through. Another February 2018 customer said they had been with the company 35 years. Two things to weigh. A January 2023 Google reviewer had the opposite experience on a bathroom renovation: a missed first appointment, communication they called terrible, and a project they said was plagued by mistakes, delays and unprofessional behavior. Price and pace surface in the older accounts too — a November 2015 client warned that Haydenville is a high-end way to go, and a January 2014 client said costs are high and that the crew started later than projected, with gaps in the work that pushed the job well past the estimate. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, #110732, is active; its Better Business Bureau page carries an A+ and also lists a construction supervisor number, CS-112863. For custom cabinetry, built-ins, or a bathroom or addition where the drawings and the carpentry come from one crew, this is a natural fit. Most of the written accounts run 2013 to 2020, so ask for recent references, and settle the schedule and the price in writing before demo.
