A bathroom built around a wheelchair user that a 2015 customer said came out "anything but institutional" — arts-and-crafts styling, custom cabinets, no hospital feel. That job says more about Haydenville Woodworking & Design than any list of services would. The company works out of 35 Conz St in Northampton as a design-build general contractor: additions, new houses, kitchens, bathrooms, and the built-in woodwork its name points at. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active and held in the company's own name. Its BBB page is an A+, accredited since October 2020, and BBB also lists a Massachusetts construction supervisor licence for the business. Forty reviews stretch back to 2011, and they keep circling the same skills. A 2016 customer described a wall of kitchen cabinets built in the company's own shop to copy existing colonial-style panelling, with a stacked washer-dryer hidden behind it and a sink moved a few feet. A 2015 homeowner wrote that while lifting a barn sill the crew noticed a V-crack at the roof peak, found the collar ties missing entirely, and fixed that too. Reviewers in 2011 and 2017 pointed at the unglamorous part — itemized proposals with overhead and profit broken out, and prompt written change orders. Two things cut against all that. The praise is mostly old, running heaviest from 2011 through 2020 on HomeAdvisor and Houzz, with only a handful of written accounts since. And one of the recent ones is bad: a January 2023 Google reviewer described a bathroom renovation with a missed first appointment, months of mistakes and delays, an owner they felt did not know the city's code requirements, four months to finish, and the wrong product installed at the end. That single account is why Google reads 4.2 from five ratings while Houzz shows 4.9 from seventeen and HomeAdvisor 5.0 from twenty-seven. Price and pace surface in the older accounts too. A 2015 reviewer called them "a high-end way to go," and a 2014 one said the job started late, had gaps in the work, and ran well past estimate before landing where they wanted it. This is a sensible call for an older-home owner around Northampton who wants cabinetry, an addition, or a bathroom rebuilt by a shop customers say they have used for decades, and whose state registration can be checked as current. Before signing, settle three things in writing: the schedule, who pulls and answers for the permits, and the exact products going in. Reviews through 2017 name Lance Hodes as principal while later ones deal with Zinnia, and a 2018 customer refers to "the new ownership" — so ask who will actually run your project.
Haydenville Woodworking and Design did a beautiful renovation of our upstairs bathroom. The team was great with communication, pre planning, implementation and design support. They also did a great job completing a few additional small repairs around the house. We would definitely use them again.
Professional and great communicators. Zinnia, Chris, & team did a fantastic job renovating 2 bathrooms in my 1890s Victorian house as well as updating / fixing other maintenance related items. I was very impressed with the craftsmanship, attention to detail, and great communication through the entire process. As part of walking them through some of the other issues (apart from the bathrooms) which needed fixing with the house (including installing permanent lally columns in the basement), Chris identified an issue with the house’s foundation that was missed by the home inspection report and did a fantastic job remediating it along with all the other items we discussed. At the end of the day, I would highly recommend them to other homeowners and will definitely be reaching back out to them if I need help with other projects.
We had Haydenville finish our basement and they were amazing! It was a big job, they were very transparent, and most importantly they worked with us when unexpected things popped up. We were able to find solutions that kept us on time and on budget.
We had a very disappointing experience with a bathroom renovation from this contractor. The communication was terrible. They missed our first appointment and we should have stopped right there. The project was plagued by mistakes, delays, and unprofessional behavior. The owner seemed unaware of city/code requirements. When it was finally done after 4 months we discovered the incorrect product was installed as well. We wanted to support a "woman/veteran/minority owned" business but sadly, we would not recommend this contractor to anyone. Edited to add: following this post, they agreed to come out and install the correct sink faucet, but told us that the shower faucet we had chosen wouldn't fit in the set-up. Be very careful with this company.
