Hilltown Tree and Garden describes itself on its website as a horticulture firm in Western Massachusetts, and it lists Amherst, Northampton and Easthampton as its service area. A customer said Jim's knowledge helped eliminate an invasive plant species, rein in a favorite overgrown tree and keep the woody smaller plants an ideal size for growth and blossoms, and that his crew worked efficiently. A customer who first asked Jim about replacing broken concrete walkways ended up agreeing to a five-year plan to remake the yard into a cottage garden, and said he and his team have just completed Year 1's work. A customer agreed to a $250 consultation fee for a visit they were told would take around 2 hours and include soil samples; they said it took an hour and consisted of walking the property, looking at the trees and giving estimates. That customer said Jim identified several uncommon trees on the property, but his price to cable a split maple was more than double two other arborists', so they went with someone else. A 2026 customer said Jim had helped on multiple projects for their home and their business. In a 2021 review, a customer said Jim McSweeney, a certified arborist, examined a dead tree that was a hazard to their home and helped with the town permit, and his company removed the tree. That 2021 customer said the company also helped with two fallen trees uprooted in the November winds, cutting the trunk so the tree tipped back into its natural hole. A 2016 article on bostonglobe.com described arborist James McSweeney of Hilltown Tree and Garden in Chesterfield setting out to collect branches from a large American elm in Northampton.

Jim and his crew from Hilltown Tree and Garden have helped us be better stewards of our property. His depth of knowledge has helped eliminate an invasive plant species we were unaware of, reign in a favorite overgrown tree and ensure that the woody smaller plants are an ideal size for growth and blossoms. His crew worked efficiently and left the property beautiful.
I contacted Jim at the beginning of June to see if he could replace my broken concrete walkways with something that better fit the style of my house with the idea that, if I liked him and his work, I'd contact him at a later date to do more landscaping. After talking to him on the phone and then meeting him in person, it was clear that he was just as excited and inspired by my long-term vision as I was; we had many of the same thoughts and ideas and we ended up agreeing to a five-year plan to completely remake my yard into the fairy tale cottage garden I've always wanted. He and his team have just completed Year 1's work and I couldn't be more pleased.
Jim was responsive to my email and scheduled a time to come look at my yard. There is a $250 consultation fee charged to visit. I agreed to this because what he explained on the phone sounded much more comprehensive than other free consultations but ultimately wasn't any different than what many others do for free. I was told to expect it to be around 2 hours and include taking soil samples, and making recommendations but it was an hour and consisted of walking the property, looking at the trees and giving estimates for items I asked for. Jim is very knowledgable about trees, including identifying several on my property that are uncommon. He agreed with my concern about a maple that needs to be cabled due to a split but his price was more than double two other arborists so ultimately we went with someone else. He gave estimates for a few others things that were also significantly higher than other options for the same service.
Jim is truly such a talented arborist and horticulture practitioner. He has helped us on multiple projects for our home and our buisness. The whole team are experts of holistic solutions to tree and garden issues. Could not recommend Hilltown more!
We had a dead tree that was a hazard to our home and we needed a good certified arborist first to examine the tree and help us with the permit with our town. Jim McSweeney is that certified arborist and his company removed the tree that put our home in danger very skillfully and professionally. They were like surgeons going in and being very careful to not harm other trees and also adhere to all of our town's rules on tree removals. They also helped us with two fallen trees that had been uprooted in the November winds, leaving giant holes in the ground when the root pod lifted out. They were able to cut the fallen trunk in precisely the right spot that let gravity right the tree and tip right back into it's natural hole, preserving the environment and making the ground safe for us to walk in. You will not meet anyone more professional and knowledgeable on trees and garden things than Jim McSweeney of Hilltown Tree ad Garden. They have my 100% endorsement and my highest recommendation for the quality of their work and for their friendly manner in how they do business.
